It develops a Marxist method for analyzing literary modes of production, and the interaction of general aesthetic and authorial ideologies. Eagleton integrates semiological insights into a materialist account of text and ideology, addressing criticism’s scientific character and offering a critique of social and aesthetic organicism in English literature. \nThis study in literary theory, written by one of the foremost youngerMarxist critics in England, explores some of the most tenacious and taxingproblems in contemporary aesthetics. It starts with a survey of ideologicalfactors which have shaped past and present literary criticism, whichincludes the first extended critique of the work of Raymond Williams tohave appeared in the Anglo-Saxon world. It then proposes a Marxist criticalmethod capable of dealing with literary modes of production'and'general’,aesthetic'and ‘authorial'ideologies.Eagleton integrates certain semiologi-cal findings into a materialist reflection on the relations between literary textand ideology, and poses central questions about the scientific character ofcriticism. He also develops a concrete critique of social and aesthetic'organicism'in English literature from Arnold to Lawrence. The book endswith a chapter on the—too often evaded—problem of what is meant byliterary ‘value'in studies of literature.Criticism and Ideology represents anotable theoretical departure within contemporary Marxisesthetics. \nTeYen1543-TerryEagleton \nCriticism and Ideology \nA Study in Marxist Literary Theory \nI \nFirst conscious of his inadequacies. It is notonly that so many issues in this field are fraught and inconclusive, but that to intervene from England is almost automatically to dis-enfranchise oneself from debate. It is to feel acutely bereft of a,tradition,as a tolerated house-guest of Europe,a precocious butparasitic alien. The essays which follow labour under these embarrass-ments.They are perhaps most marked in the final chapter on theproblem of literary value, which seems to me little more than aprovisional clearing of the ground on which a genuine discussion ofihese matters could be conducted;but they are also apparent in thecxcessively cryptic and elliptical language of Chapter 4(a revised andcxpanded version of an article which first appeared in New LeftReview),which in trying to compress a complex span of literaryhistory into a single framework lapses inevitably into inexact formu-lation,metaphorical gesture, partial and reductive reading.I shouldadd that this was the first section of the book to be written, and thatit stands to some extent under the judgement of the two precedingchapters, where(undoubtedly at the cost of schematism and simplifi-cation)I have striven for more rigorous formulations. But I havefelt it best to let the book stand as it is,replete with errors andomissions which are both the result of my own limitations and, perhaps, inevitable in a work which has little as yet in England tosupport it. \nI am deeply grateful to a number of people who have given mevaluable advice and encouragement in writing this book.I mustthank in particular Perry Anderson,Francis Barker,Mike Ewart,John Goode,John Harrison,Quintin Hoare,Francis Mulhern, \n8 \nPaul Tickell,Alan Wall and George Wotton, all of whom havegenerously spared time from their own work to criticise the manu-script.I also have a long-standing debt to the many past and presentmembers of the Marxist criticism collective in the University ofOxford, who in an improbable institution have pioneered a contextwithin which this kind of discourse has become continuous,absorb-ing and productive. It is certain that without their devotion to theproblems of a materialist criticism, this book would never have beenwritten. There are similar groups and individuals thro","cbCaimw6sXVLj4Ht","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimw6sXVLj4Ht","pdf",7383147,193,"English","# Contents\n## Preface\n## I.
