literature and thenature of criticism, this book presents some of the more importantways in which literature has been discussed It s neither a historyof critucism nor an annotated anthology of significant critical worksThe critical pieces quoted and discussed represent examples of amethod and a point of view-and ther implications in both theoryand practice \nThe divis1on into three parts is dictated by both logic and con-venience Part One considers how various critics have answered thequestion \"What is the nature of imaginative lterature, what is 1tsuse and value?”Part Two deals with the practical critic, and thedifferent ways in which specific works of literary art have been andcan be evaluated Part Three takes up those fields of inqurry in whichthe literary critic touches other kinds of investigation, such as thepsychological and the sociological,it inquires into the relationshipbetween lterary criticism and these other disciplines True, manycritics move freely from philosophic criticism to practical criticism, and the practical critic frequently advances and retreats around the areadiscussed in Part Three further,a definitron of the nature of poetryoften has practical consequences in description and evaluation Thereis bound to be some overlapping between the Parts-but the readerwill have no dfficulty in recognizing the different kinds of critical ac-tivity involved at any given point \nMany important critics are not discussed at all Horace,Quin-tulan,V1da,Boileau,for instance, will not be found here, althougheach is important in the history of criticism None of them, however, llustrates a method of approaching a lterary work which is funda-mentally different from that of some other critic who is discussed \n## viii Introduction\n\nWhere possible,I have taken my examples of methods and ap-proaches from critics who wrote in Englsh,to avoid the problemsthat inevitably arise when a critic's thought is translated Plato,Aris-totle,and Longinus had to be included because of the unique m-portance of the contribution of each, even though this has meantgiving more than one key passage whose original meaning is prob-lematical \nI have used individual critical essays to illustrate ways in whichworks of literature can be discussed,or points of view about the na-ture and value of works of lterary art The modern critical worksquoted and discussed are not meant to represent a complete con-spectus of modern criticism Nor has it been my intention to givea full account of the thought of any individual critic-it has beenno part of my
