Ong’s scholarly book Fighting for Life: Contest, Sexuality and Consciousness, linking contest and competitiveness to the evolution of human consciousness. The review recounts a personal story that frames the central dispute between the sexes, then summarizes Ong’s argument about adversativeness, selection, and male behavioral tendencies.
(Cornell University Press,$14.95)
Reviewed by LAURENCE SMITH,a
former editor of The Critic.
I recall a picnic a few years ago.The
food was nearly prepared when a foot-
ball being passed between my children
and me took a bad hop and bounced
squarely against the back of my wife's
head, the impact catapulting one of her
contact lenses into the thick,knee-deep
weedy undergrowth of the forest pre-
serve.While the children screamed at
each other in fear, and my wife at me
in anger,I trudged into the weeds,
dropped to my knees and with all the
accumulated male heroic urgings of the
species began the quixotic,impossible
search.
Except that,incredibly,I found it:a
transparent speck in a galaxy of green.
With ego quivering in exaltation,I
carefully gathered the lens between
thumb and finger and with eucharistic
euphoria elevated it toward my wife's
one unblurred,enraged eye.To which
that cum laude graduate, diviner of | truth for our children and full-colonel
in the war between the sexes, dismissed
in five words both my achievement and
the two thousand year evolution of
Aristotelian logic:“What if it isn't
mine?"she hissed.
We were divorced shortly thereafter.
Fighting for Life is a scholarly work
that remains academically elevated
above today's commonplace redistri-
bution of pots and pans.Yet,through
his examination of the role of contest
in the evolution of human conscious-
ness,Professor Ong brings into clearer
focus the divisions and discord that
haunt the male-female dialectic today.
The most significant differences be-
tween the sexes are linked to competi-
tiveness,suggests Father Ong,and to
this argument he brings compelling in-
sights that are valuable to sight-im-
paired ladies and absurd Don Quixotes
everywhere.
Applying such branches of knowl-
edge as anthropology,sociology,
biology,linguistics,psychology,plus
literary,intellectual and educational
history—in effect,every field short of
podiatry—Father Ong traces by"in-
timate connections”the progression of
contest through organic evolution and
into the intellectual development of the | human species. In fact,he contends
that only through“adversativeness,”
or things in conflict,do we have the
means by which to understand our own
existence.
Throughout the animal world,ad-
versativeness is more pronounced in
males.Moreover,writes Professor
Ong,"male combativeness is more
marked among vertebrates than in-
vertebrates;it reaches its higher pitches
higher in the evolutionary scale."This
would imply that male aggressiveness is
"an advanced rather than primitive
form of behavior."But this male be-
havior,as it is linked to evolutionary
selection,in a sense indicates male in-
feriority.Males are expendable,not as
necessary as the female in the continua-
tion of the species,and therefore
generally assume the higher risk roles
of hunter,fighter and promiscuous
progenitor.
In the human species,the adversa-
tive structures of biological evolution
spill over into the realm of conscious-
ness,whereby the human achieves his
unique reflectiveness,his ability to
speak of self as "I."And while males
continue to display a higher adversa-
tive posture,Father Ong also sees the
male as living from conception in a |
| --- | --- | ---
