BACKPASSAGE OF BRADY BILL\n\nWould Reverse Years Of Tradition \nAnother tradition is headed for the scrapheap.Embattled FBI Director William S.Sessionsis trying to move the Bureau into the realm of poli-tics. \nThe FBI traditionally has maintained a stanceof public neutrality on political issues, but Sessionsis asking Attorney General Janet Reno to let theBureau take a stand on the controversial issue ofgun control. \nIn a letter sent to Reno July 6,Sessionsproposed a six-point policy statement on the Bradybill, which would require a five-day waiting periodfor buying handguns. He said he wants the FBI togo public and call for immediate enactment of thebill, which killed anti-crime legislation lastyear. In this session of Congress, the Brady Billhas been introduced separately in both the Houseand Senate. \nSessions asked Reno to approve the policystatement and advise President Clinton of the deci-sion.As of Crime Control Digest's press time,aJustice Department spokesman said Reno had notyet reviewed the proposal. \nHowever,Sessions has already notified eachof the FBI's special agents in charge (SACs)of the56 field offices of the proposed policy change.Bureau officials are saying this is a one-time depar-ture from the FBI's traditional stance of not takinga public stand on political issues. \n(See FBI,page six) \n ISSN 0011-1295 \n,1993 \nPage 1 \nIN THIS ISSUE
