Resources OnMexican Border To Curb Crime Wave  \nTexas has unleashed the most ag- gressive campaign against crime as- sociated with illegal aliens of anystate bordering Mexico.  \nAs the federal government has pulled back support for state and lo-  cal law enforcement and plans even deeper reductions in aid,Texas has joined California,Arizona and New Mexico in assuming duties that pre- viously rested with federal customs and border agents.  \n\"With ‘Operation Rio Grande',the state will take the lead role in co-ordinating state and local efforts todetect,track and deter criminal activ-ity along the border,\"said TexasGov.Rick Perry said.  \nThe governor said he would use\"intelligence,available state assets,and a new command and controlstructure,.….to take back our borderfrom those who exploit it.”  \nThe operation brings together avariety of state resources to better se-cure the Texas-Mexico border fromBrownsville to El Paso.  \n“There is not only great concernthat the drug trade is becoming moreaggressive,but that terrorist organiza-tions are seeking to exploit our po-rous border,\"Perry said.\"Last yearalone,135,000 people who are not ofMexican descent were apprehended  \n entering Texas illegally.The threat isreal,and it grows each day.”  \nRecent events along the borderindicate that violence and criminalactivity have escalated,includingMexican officials apprehending fourIraqis headed to U.S.soil,the discov- ery of a criminal organization's weapons stockpile in Laredo that in- cluded improvised explosive devicesand fragmentation hand grenades,andthe recent chase of narco-terroristsinvolving local deputies and TexasDepartment of Public Safety officersin Hudspeth County.  \nPerry also activated the Gover-nor's Emergency Management Coun-cil and placed the Texas Fusion Cen-ter on the highest alert level under thesupervision of Texas Homeland Se-curity Director Steve McCraw.  \nThe State Operations Center willserve as a central point of coordina-tion for state,local and federal offi-cials,as well as a single hub for inci-dent reporting and intelligence sup-port for law enforcement agencies upto 100 miles away from the RioGrande River.  \nPerry's action represents the firsttime the State Operations Center hasbeen activated to coordinate a law en-forcement operation.  \nAs part of “Operation Rio  \n
