scorerwho is an active member of the club in thatcapacity, whether qualifiedor not.Invariably,it is the case that a member ofeach team is deputedto score, changing to another player when that person is due to batwith no scorer being available when the team is in the field. \nThis handbook has been compiled with that situation very much inmind in the hope that clubs will recognise the essential need for anappointed scorer in order to have an accurate record of the matchas envisaged in Laws 4 and 21 of the MCC Official Laws of Cricket. \nThis book has also been written for existing scorers in the belief thatthey will gain from it in terms of recognition as well as knowledgeand reference. \nIn his book on Cricket Umpiring and Scoring,Tom Smith,MBE.,wrote in comments on Law 4-The Scorers -that:- \n'An efficient and conscientious scorer, although an asset tothe game, seldom receives much recognition.Umpires aresometimes thanked, more often criticised, but scorers areusually taken very much for granted.!' \nThis is a book for scorers -to recruit them,to give themrecognition,to improve their status and to provide them with amanual of their own. \nFootnote \nThis books concentrates on the conventional method of scoring(sometimes known as the box-type system)but also includes somedetails of advanced scoring. However,it is acknowledged thatelectronic scoring has arrived on the cricket scene and lap-topcomputers are now mandatory for scoring at county matches to speedup the process of getting scores to the public through the media.Whilst aspects of this development are likely to involve other areasof cricket in the course of time, this book is written withoutreservations for the purposes stated in the Preface. \n# HOW TO USE THIS BOOK\n\nFirst,read it throughout and note that - \nPart 1 covers recruitment and training of scorers andpre-match preparation. \nPart 2 refers to aspects of the Laws of Cricket which arerelevant to the duties of a scorer. \nPart 3
