SCARBOROUGH TECHNICAL CULLEELIBRARY\n\n# One:The 'Laws'ofDevelopment\n\nTRADITIONALLY,the artist is expected to talk aboutart;to say a few words about a plastic object in front ofhim,or to make a few tentative suggestions about whathe regards as his own objectives.Very frequently theartist will talk at length about the impossibility of discussing anything. \nI wish, however,to consider matters which are bytheir nature discussable,in other words, ideas:ideasconnected with painting andsculpture, but more overtlywith the problem of the development of the artist.Iprefer to talk about creative development, even thoughit may sound a little pompous, because I want to avoidthe semantic attachments connected with the idea of arteducation.Education suggests too passive a position onthe part of the student;it suggests an educational bodywhich educates and a student who receives education.Obviously all adult teaching is a form of brainwashing, but there is no need to pride oneself on the fact.It is amatter of indifference to me whether a student ordersthe pattern of his own artistic growth or whether for aperiod of time he puts himself in the hands of a body \nostensibly devoted to that end.I am quite convincedthat in general art schools do not produce better artists, they only produce a different kind of artist, and the subjects I propose we discuss are as relevant to ayoung mansetting out to discover whether or not he has talent, while working in an office or in a factory,as to a pampered and oversupported student working in anorganization dedicated wholly to his welfare. \nThis afternoon I propose we consider a very widefield, one which unavoidably involves considerablegeneralization:I offer for consideration two propositions which,in the manner of Mr Parkinson,I shallcall Butler's laws of creative development: \n(I)All other things being equal, \ndevelopment is proportional to exposure. \n(2)Development is proportional to motivation, which is inversely proportional to adjustment. \nThe objective of every art student worth the nameshould be that of becoming a great artist;I do notboggle at the term, and I do not consider that any lesserambition is worth consideration here. Those of youwho look forward to becoming art teachers or hope toenrich your lives between now and marriage do not, inmy opinion, deserve the sort of support I have in mind.If you do not feel in your bones that you have it in youto become great creative artists,I suggest you would bebetter employed in training yourselves to make moneyin any of the thousand and one occupations dedicatedto that objective.","cbCaib24GdtVvsKZ","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaib24GdtVvsKZ","pdf",3795597,94,"English","# One: The 'Laws' of Development\n## Creative development and
