Ent. All rights reserved. \nBased on Kevin Kwan’s best-selling book,“Crazy Rich Asians” is the first studio film in over 25 years to feature an almost all Asian-American cast. The plot centers on a Chinese American woman named Rachel who learns her boyfriend hails from one of Singapore’s wealthiest families. Cue the helicopter rides, lavish parties and glittering outfits as the couple travels to Singapore for a wedding where Rachel faces plenty of disapproving scrutiny from vicious rivals and traditionalist family members. A series of clashes between tradition and individualism – with plenty of familial duty mixed in – makes for an exciting tale of family, friendships and true love. \nThis discussion guide is designed to facilitate educational programs after viewing the film “Crazy Rich Asians.” Its purpose is to generate discussion based on social issues found within the movie and for program participants to reflect on themes that might be pertinent to them. Therefore, there are no “right” or“wrong” answers to questions in this guide. \nThe discussion facilitator may choose to utilize one of the following activities asa means of developing discussion: \nInvite a member of a local Asian American organization to come and discuss the differences between eastern and western culture related to family. \nRead sections of the book,“Crazy Rich Asians” and compare and contrast the similarities and differences between the movie and the book. \nInvite a speaker to come and discuss the challenges international citizens and their families face within their communities and living abroad. \nAttend an international festival in your community. Talk with attendees about their experiences and the cultural differences they deal with locally and at home. \n\n| Issues |\n| --- |\n| |\n\nDiscuss Rachel and Nick’s relationship at the start of the story. Do you think Nick should have been upfront with Rachel about his financial situation? Why or why not? \nHow does the film use music to capture the culture of Singapore and the characters in the film? Singapore was shown as a city of contrasts. In many ways very western but in other ways eastern. How do these contrasts parallel the challenges Rachel, Nick and his family face? \nWhy do you think Nick’s mother, Eleanor, believes Rachel is not fit for Nick? \nHow does Eleanor’s relationship with Nick’s grandmother impact how she interacts with her children and their significant others? Discuss. \nHave you ever experienced family member disapproving of someone’s choice of friends or relationships? What impact did this have on them? \nHave you ever been in a relationship where the families are very different? How did you handle the differences? \nThe characters’ lifestyles are beyond lavish. Can you relate to these characters or does their financial situation make it hard to understand their challenges? \nHave you ever felt pressure to assume family responsibilities you either were not ready for or did not want to assume, like Nick? How did you respond? \nWhat happens when Nick and Rachel go to respective bachelor and bachelorette parties? How does Nick respond when Rachel tells him about her experience? \nNick’s mother corrects him when he says Rachel is Chinese. She says she is Chinese-American. What is she implying by saying this? Do you think there is a difference? \nHow does Rachel experience racism during her time in Singapore? What does it say about society when someone can be seen as not enough of a specific culture? \nHave you ever experienced a situation when someone thought you were not enough? Black enough, white enough, Jewish enough, etc? \nAstrid tells her husband “It was never my job to make you feel like a man. I can’t make you something you’re not.” Discuss this statement in the context of Astrid and her husband’s situation taking into context their different backgrounds and experiences. \nWhy do you think Rachel’s mother did not tell her the t","cbCaidkDESNRBiH8","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidkDESNRBiH8","pdf",1046059,"English","# Issues\n## Relationship and honesty at the start of the story\n## Culture, music, and contrasts\n## Family expectations and acceptance\n## Racism and identity\n## Friendship, dating, and differing families\n## Duty, responsibility, and life choices\n## Wedding conflicts and changing opinions","[{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of this discussion guide for Crazy Rich Asians?\",\"answer\":\"It is designed to facilitate educational programs after viewing the film by generating discussion based on social issues and themes participants can reflect on.
