It explores how family legacy shapes successive generations, the impact of European imperialism and modern Western exposure, and the narrative role of Chinese word explanations and footnotes. Which scenes and settings best capture this excess? What do the many references to well-known luxury brands and exotic, expensive settings contribute to your sense of the time, place, and worldview of the characters? \nNick’s family has enjoyed wealth and privilege over several generations. Discuss the impact of their position on each generation, from the imperious Eleanor to the status-consumed Eddie to Astrid, the It girl of Asian society, to Nick. Despite their very different approaches to life, what rules or traditions influence their behavior and interactions? What elements from his past does Nick retain, despite his new life in America? \nWhat role does the legacy of European imperialism play in the older generation’s tastes and style? How is the younger generation affected by their travels abroad and exposure to modern-day Western society? What insights does Rachel and Nick’s conversation with Su Yi give into the melding and clashing of European and Chinese cultures over the course of time (pp. 335–38)? \nIn addition to straightforward explanations of Chinese words, what function do the footnotes serve? In what ways do they help the author to fill out the narrative or comment on the context and content of his story? \nWhat did you know about the financial boom in contemporary Asia before you read the novel? Were you surprised by manifestations of wealth depicted in the book? Peik Lin’s father says,“[T]his so-called‘prosperity’ is going to be the downfall of Asia. Each new generation becomes lazier than the next.... Nothing lasts forever, and when this boom ends, these youngsters won’t know what hit them”(p. 303). To what extent are his insights accurate, not only in regard to the situation in Asia today but also to economic patterns across history? \nWhat do the marriages of Eleanor and Philip, Astrid and Michael, and Eddie and Fiona show about what makes a marriage work and what can undermine even the best-intentioned husbands and wives? \nWhy does the author devote different sections of the novel to specific characters? What effect does this have on your impressions of and sympathies for the problems and prejudices that motivate each of them? \nKevin Kwan has said that his novel follows an age-old literary tradition (Wall Street Journal, July 11, 2013). He points to Jane Austen writing about the “manor-house set,” Edith Wharton’s tales of America’s gilded age at the turn of the century, and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s chronicles of New York in the roaring ’20s. If you have read these books—or other novels about the manners and mores ofthe past—discuss the echoes and parallels you find in Crazy Rich Asians. \nF. Scott Fitzgerald famously said, \"The rich are different from you and me.\" In what ways are the characters in Crazy Rich Asians different from you and the people you know? Do they reflect the values of the particular communities Kwan explores or do they represent the ways of rich people everywhere? How do the divisions between economic and social status manifest themselves in American society? \nBehind its satirical tone and intent, what does the novel suggest about the ethical and emotional implications of the behavior that the characters indulge in? Does it make you think about some of your own actions or decisions? \nDiscuss the role of gossip in the novel. What kinds of rumors do Nick’s friends and family spread about Rachel, and why? How do misunderstandings and misinformation (intentional or not) propel the plot and help define the characters? Consider, for example, the conversations at the Bible study class Eleanor attends (p. 108–109) and the chatter of the guests at Araminta’s bachelorette party (pp. 262–70). \nWhat sort of future do you imagine for Nick and Rache","cbCaimibfaBVrljP","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimibfaBVrljP","pdf",710061,"English","# Discussion Questions\n## Themes, setting, and cultural references\n## Characters, family legacy, and social status\n## Language notes, footnotes, and narrative context\n## Wealth, marriage, gossip, and plot development\n## Ethics, emotions, and future possibilities","[{\"question\":\"What does the guide ask readers to identify about wealth and consumption?\",\"answer\":\"It asks which scenes and settings best capture excess, and how references to luxury brands and expensive locations shape readers’ sense of time, place, and the characters’ worldview.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the guide address language elements like Chinese words and footnotes?\",\"answer\":\"It asks what function footnotes serve, and how they help fill out the narrative or provide commentary on context and content in the story.\"},{\"question\":\"What role does gossip play according to the guide?\",\"answer\":\"The guide prompts readers to consider what rumors Nick’s friends and family spread about Rachel, and how misunderstandings and misinformation propel the plot while defining characters.\"}]","Crazy Rich Asians: A Reader's Guide - read questions | PDF",{"code":4,"msg":80,"data":94},[95,99,102,106,111,116,121,126,131,134,138],{"id":22,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":96,"show_sort_weight":97,"slug":98},"Story & Novel",90,"story-novel",{"id":26,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":29,"show_sort_weight":100,"slug":101},80,"literature",{"id":33,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":103,"show_sort_weight":104,"slug":105},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":107,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":108,"show_sort_weight":109,"slug":110},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":112,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":113,"show_sort_weight":114,"slug":115},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":117,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":118,"show_sort_weight":119,"slug":120},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":122,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":123,"show_sort_weight":124,"slug":125},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":127,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":128,"show_sort_weight":129,"slug":130},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":129,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":132,"show_sort_weight":129,"slug":133},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":135,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":136,"show_sort_weight":135,"slug":137},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":139,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":25,"category_name":140,"show_sort_weight":107,"slug":141},19,"General","general"]
