Advanced learners complete additional independent reading and require deeper analysis of key events or individuals, culminating in connections from medieval origins to modern developments influenced by the Renaissance, Scientific Revolution, and Enlightenment.","CPA and Advanced Levels World History I Syllabus  \n“The best prophet of the future is the past.” Lord Byron  \nCourse Description  \nThrough World History I, students explore ancient civilizations and post-classical empires, analyzing their rise, their fall, and their legacies. The course offers a global perspective, investigating the geography, culture, socio-political ideas, and innovations of these time periods. Students end the course with an analysis of how the western world transitioned from medieval to modern based upon the ideas and innovations of the Renaissance, the Scientific Revolution, and the Enlightenment. Throughout the course, students are asked to make connections between regions and time periods, often tracing the evolution of a socio-political idea, cultural norm, or innovation from the ancient world to the modern.  \nStudents are taught to access information by reading historical texts and viewing historical interviewsand documentaries. Close reading and historical thinking skills are taught and reinforced throughout the course, including contextualizing events and perspectives, analyzing cause and effect, recognizing patterns, and comparing and contrasting ideologies and events. Students develop the reading and thinking skills that will allow them to analyze history in high school and college courses. Lessons for the CPA level are scaffolded through each unit, including close reading, notetaking, and organizing written responses. The same text is used at both levels; however, more independent reading and notetaking will be required at the Advanced level. Advanced level students will also analyze specific events and/or significant individuals connected to each unit of study. Details are noted in the syllabus.  \nThis course is directly aligned with the traits defined in the Portrait of the Crusader. Through the study of history, students observe the impacts of injustice and oppression versus justice and freedom, and they are encouraged to value and respect the rights and dignity of all people. This class encourages students to be inspired learners, faithful citizens, and honorable souls.  \nAssessment Practices  \nStudent knowledge and skills are measured in a variety of ways throughout the course, which may include the following:  \n● Written assessments that include terminology, short answers, and constructed responses.  \n● Essays that ask students to respond with sound reasoning and thoughtful insight.  \n● A project that may include a presentation or performative component.  \n● A creative connection assessment which asks students to put themselves into an historic situation and create a memoir, journal, or letters.  \n● A Socratic Seminar or other form of debate.  \nEssential Questions for the Course  \n● Why do civilizations rise to power?
