James has some great ideas that are kinder to the wildlife \n(see pages 99-102) \nFrom the editor \nNurturing nature \nForme, the two things I love most about the British countryside are, firstly, that it’s a working landscape–a place that providesjobs and produces the nation’s food. And, secondly, that it’s also a haven of beauty, of fascinating flora and fauna; of trees and woods, birds, butterfliesand bumblebees. A place to relax, recharge and, yes, feel proud of. \nIn this edition, our focus is particularly on nature and the environment (from pages 87 to 113), which is largely a celebration of \nthose two forces, working in tandem. On page 111, Rutland farmer Sarah Bell speaks powerfully of how she looks to encourage wildlife in what’soften, rather disparagingly, called the ‘dead space’on farms. The bit of land by the yard, the strip along the track, the patch of fieldat the back of the barn–the forgotten places that aren’t cropped orgrazed where, withabit of encouragement or intentful neglect, wildlife can thrive. \n“Nettles, for example, geta bad reputation,”she says.“Nobody wants to fall into them: they sting, they spread and they look messy. But they are vital. Those scruffy patches of nettles are nurseries for butterflies, like small tortoiseshells, peacocksand red admirals.Their caterpillars depend on nettles to survive.” \nHer words area timely reminder of the work tens of thousands of farmers do to produce our food and maintain our beautiful countryside.Continuing this theme, theNFU’s assistant environment adviser Jana McWhirter explains some of the lesser-known things that farmers are doing to look after the countryside– from providing seeds for birds to looking after the soils. \nIna similar vein, on pages 105-108, countryman Richard Negus explains his passion for the craft of hedgelaying.Hedges, he says, are vital boundary markers, livestock barriersand wildlife corridors, and his new book Wordsfrom the Hedge is described as a love letter to the hedge. It’s worth reflecting that hedges seem like an innate part of the British countryside, but each one was planted with a purpose and their maintenance is all part of the landscape that we love. \nFinally, this month, we reflect on the 50th anniversary of the great drought of 1976–that extraordinary summer where temperatures regularly hit the mid- 30sand parts of the country went without a drop of rain for 45 days.Growing up in the 1980s, it was strongly in the folk memory of the time.I vividly remember, during warm weather, people saying:“Ah well, it’snot as bad asthe summer of’76!”The issue of climate change remains hotly debated to the present day, but it just goes to show thatthe vagaries of the British weather are nothing new. \nMartin Stanhope Editor \nContact us... \nCountryside member helpline: \n0370 840 2030 \nEmail: [info@nfucountryside.co.uk](info@nfucountryside.co.uk) \nAddress: \nNFU HQ, Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire CV8 2TZ \n","cbCaidqbYBGnGoHH","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidqbYBGnGoHH","pdf",86271288,4,1,132,"English","en",105,"# Contents\n## View from the farm\n## Countryside environment special\n## Regulars\n## On the cover\n## Rural wisdom and reviews\n## Feathered Focus\n## Dog breeds and the law\n## Day in the Life of a Vet\n## Tales of Amos","[{\"question\":\"本期《Countryside》主要聚焦什么主题？ ,"https://schema.org",{"og:url":53,"og:type":88,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":59,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":90,"canonical":53},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":25},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":93},[94,98,102,106,111,116,121,126,131,134,136],{"id":21,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":95,"show_sort_weight":96,"slug":97},"Story & Novel",90,"story-novel",{"id":48,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":99,"show_sort_weight":100,"slug":101},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":20,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":103,"show_sort_weight":104,"slug":105},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":107,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":108,"show_sort_weight":109,"slug":110},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":112,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":113,"show_sort_weight":114,"slug":115},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":117,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":118,"show_sort_weight":119,"slug":120},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":122,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":123,"show_sort_weight":124,"slug":125},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":127,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":128,"show_sort_weight":129,"slug":130},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":129,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":132,"show_sort_weight":129,"slug":133},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":11,"slug":135},"lifestyle",{"id":137,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":47,"category_name":138,"show_sort_weight":107,"slug":139},19,"General","general"]
