It will be used by a law enforcement and a community taskforce to reduce violent gang and gun crime in Saginaw. The grant will also support anti-drug and anti-gang instruction for students in the Saginaw Public School district. \nThe grant award was announced at a press conference atSCF on Oct. 7. Congressman Dan Kildee, Saginaw Police Department Chief Robert Ruth, Saginaw Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Ramont Roberts, Saginaw County Prosecuting Attorney John McColgan, and SCF President & CEO Reneé Johnston were in attendance. \n“Every Saginaw resident deserves to feel safe in their neighborhood. This federal grant will help reduce violent crime and make our community a safer place to live,” Congressman Kildee said. \nLaunched two decades ago as an evidence-based and community-oriented response to serious gun crime, PSN is a key component of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Comprehensive Strategy for Reducing Violent Crime. The PSN approach is guided by four key principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our communities; supporting community-based organizations that help prevent violence from occurring in the first place; setting focused and strategic enforce- \nFrom left to right: Reneé Johnston, SCF President & CEO; John McColgan, Saginaw County Prosecuting Attorney; Chief Robert Ruth, Saginaw Police Department; Congressman Dan Kildee; Dr. Ramont Roberts, Saginaw Public Schools; Lt. The fundamental goal is to reduce violent crime, not simply to increase the number of arrests or prosecutions. \nDawn Ison, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, whose division oversees the implementation of Project Safe Neighborhoods in Saginaw, says:“Saginaw has the opportunity to greatly improve the quality of life for the residents of Saginaw who are most acutely affected by gun violence. This award is great news for Saginaw as itwill provide the funding needed to help reach our goal of reducing gun violence.” \nAccording to Dr. Ramont Roberts, the awarding of the PSN grant will allow Saginaw Public Schools to continue support the socio-emotional needs of its students as well as their safety.“We look forward to our \npartnership with local law enforcement officials to ensure that violence is reduced in the city and perhaps, more importantly, working together proactively by equipping our young men and women with the skills that will allow them to make sound decisions educationally and socially.” \n“The Saginaw Community Foundation is excited and honored to not only be awarded this opportunity, but also to work closely again with the Saginaw Police Department, other law enforcement departmentsand community partners who are committed to making the City of Saginaw a safe community. We appreciate Congressman Kildee’s continued support for our work and our community,” said Reneé Johnston, president and CEO, Saginaw Community Foundation.“Since we have previously been awarded this grant opportunity, and experienced \nContinued on page 4… \nJohn Shelton Chair \nTodd Gregory Vice-Chair \nReneé S.
