Drought-resistant cereals include millet and sorghum.  \nLegumes such as cowpeas, pigeon peas, chickpeas and green gram are droughtresistant and a good source of protein.  \nRoot crops such as sweet potato, cassava and some varieties of yam are droughtresistant too.  \nAnother possibility is to choose early-ripening varieties of main crops, such as early maize (seepage 6 for a relevant Shell Book) .  \nTry mixed cropping  \nIncrease the variety of crops you grow, because different crops react differently to changing weather conditions. Hopefully some crops will dowell whatever the weather in any one growing season.  \nMixed cropping means growing two or more crops next to eachother in the same field. Plant alternate rows of cereals such as maize, millet or sorghum with rows of legumes such as cowpeas, beans or lablab. This can benefit the cereals, as legumes fix nitrogen in the soil, providing extra nutrients. Legumes also help to cover the soil and keep it moist even in times of drought. They are equally useful in times of heavy rainfall, as then they help to prevent loss of topsoil, which is a particular risk with fields of maize.  \nCrops from the same family, or crops that need the same nutrients, should not be planted together, as they will compete with each other. For example, do not mix maize with sorghum or millet.  \nPlant crops at different times  \nUse long-range weather forecasts whenever possible before planting, so as to benefit from predicted rains. Plant your crops at different times. Plant some after the first rains, some just before the main rains, some immediately after the rains, and some three weeks after the main rains (when planting will help destroy early germinating weeds) .
