the project, and Janet Birchhelped in the construction and piloting of the questionnaire. On thestatistical side,Felicity Willetts was responsible for the data processingand Harvey Goldstein and Rachel Peto gave us statistical advice.MiaKellmer Pringle,Jessie Parfit and Willem van der Eyken commentedconstructively on the draft manuscript. \nOur thanks are due to the staff of Social and Community PlanningResearch and the team of interviewers from the Centre for SampleSurveys for their efficiency in carrying out the fieldwork part of theproject. \nOur very sincere thanks go to the many parents we talked to,notonly those in the sample, but others contacted through organizationssuch as Family Service Units and especially members of Gingerbread. \nAlso,we are grateful to George Clark for the photographs in thisbook and to the parents and children who appear in them. They wereone-parent families at the time, but were not part of the interviewsample and none of the findings refers directly to them. \nFinally,we must thank the financial sponsors, the Buttle Trust, without whose support, this project could not have been undertaken. \n'Why couldn’t someone have come round and asked me all thesekind of things when I needed help so much?At least it makes youfeel that someone cares about how you are feeling.' \nThese words from a widowed father echo the sentiments of manyparents in a similar situation.Left to bring up their childrensinglehanded, they find that in many ways our social system is just notgeared to the problems and needs of families with only one parent. \nOne-parent families are a large and growing minority group in oursociety.According to the estimate quoted in the Finer Report(1974),there are 100,000 fathers and over 500,000 mothers in Britain todaybringing up children alone. In recent years a number of reports havedrawn attention to some of the specific problems faced by suchfamilies. The Child Poverty Action Group(1974)has highlighted thefinancial hardship suffered by fatherless families, pointing out thatsingle mothers are the fastest growing group of people who rely onSupplementary Benefit for long-term support. The Catholic HousingAid Society(1972)has drawn attention to the often acute housingproblems faced by the 8,000 one-parent families who have approachedthem for help with accommodation.Newspaper reports, and thepublications of organizations such as Gingerbread and the NationalCouncil for One-Parent Families, abound with examples of ","cbCaievQzlwnYYJu","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaievQzlwnYYJu","pdf",3606026,88,"English","# Contents\n##
