While this pace works great for many campaigns , some DMs prefer the story of the campaign with pauses built into it-time when adventurers aren't going on adventures. The downtime rules given in this section can be used as an alternative to the approach in PHB and DMG , or you can use the material here to inspire you to create your own options. By involving characters in downtime that takes weeks or even months , you can give your campaign a longer timeline in which world events have been playing for years. Wars begin and end , tyrants come and go , and royal lines rise and fall during the story you and the characters tell. The downtime rules also provide characters with ways to spend or free themselves from the money they accumulate on their adventures. The system presented here consists of two elements. First , it introduces the concept of rivals. Second , it details a series of downtime activities that characters can undertake. The earning downtime days of the League Of Adventurers Player's Guide to 7.0' Characters earn downtime of 5 days of downtime for 2 hours of prescribed adventure lengths (or 5 days of downtime for every 2 cumulative hours of play for The Hardcover Adventure) . Rivals Xanathar Guide throughout , p.123-125 rivals NPCs who oppose the characters and make their presence felt whenever the characters are involved in downtime. The opponent may be the villain you featured in past adventures or plan to use in the future. Rivals can also include good or neutral people who are at odds with the characters , whether because they have opposite goals or they simply don't like each other. Cultist Orcus , whose plans are thwarted by the characters , an ambitious merchant prince who wants to rule the city with an iron fist , and the naked high priest Helm , who is convinced that the characters are not up to anything good all the examples of rivals. The opponent's agenda changes over time. Although the characters are involved in downtime only between adventures , their rivals rarely rest , continuing to twist the plots and work against the characters , even when the characters leave to do something else. Creating a competitor in fact , the rival is a somewhat specialized NPC. You can use Chapter 4 DMG to create a new NPC for this purpose , or choose one of the current cast of auxiliary characters and embellish that NPC as described below. Characters can have two or three competitors at the same time , each of which has a separate agenda. By least , one must be a villain , but the other may be neutral or good ; conflicts with these rivals may be social or political , rather than manifest as direct attacks. Teh Teh rivals have a connection with their opponents on a personal level. Find links in the backsta in character theories or events of recent adventures that explain what caused the opponent's actions. The best problem to put the characters in is the troubles they created for themselves. d20 Example Rival 1 Tax Collector who is convinced the characters are dodging fees. 2 Politician who is concerned that the characters cause more problems than they solve. 3 The high priest , who worries about the characters , reduces the prestige of the temple. 4 The Wizard , who blames the characters for some recent troubles. 5 Rival Adventure Party. 6 Bard , who loves scandal enough to spark one. 7 Childhood rival or member of a rival clan. 8 Despised brother or parent. 9 Merchant who blames the characters for any business woes. \n10 Rookie to make the mark in the world. 11 Brother or ally of the defeated enemy. 12 Official seek to restore tarnished reputation. 13 Deadly enemy disguised as a social rival. 14 The villain seeks to seduce the characters to evil. 15 Rejected romantic interest. 16 Pol","cbCaio44NDd7QQ7w","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaio44NDd7QQ7w","pdf",80433,"English","# Downtime pacing and campaign timeline\n## Alternatives to PHB/DMG\n# System overview\n## Two key elements: rivals and downtime activities\n# Rivals: definition and roles\n## How rival agendas shift during downtime\n# Creating a rival competitor\n## Goals and resources\n## Plans and actions","[{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of the downtime rules described in Xanathar’s guide?\",\"answer\":\"They provide an optional method to manage story pacing by inserting pauses between adventures, allowing world events to progress during downtime.\"},{\"question\":\"What are rivals in this downtime system?\",\"answer\":\"Rivals are specialized NPC opponents who actively oppose the characters and continue working against them during the downtime intervals.\"},{\"question\":\"How does an opponent’s presence get expressed in the campaign?\",\"answer\":\"By choosing ways the opponent’s plans can be advanced during working weeks of downtime, using actions or events that follow from the rival’s goals.\"}]","Continue 5e Downtime Xanathar | PDF",1791292355]
