Dennett","","Content and Consciousness by D.C. Dennett explores philosophical questions about the mind, focusing on how mental phenomena can be understood through language, information, and scientific explanation. The table of contents outlines themes from the ontology of mind and intentionality to evolution in the brain and the ascription of content. It then develops a sustained discussion of consciousness, introspective certainty, awareness and control, mental imagery, and the relation between thinking, reasoning, actions, and intentions. is now just twenty years since the first draft of this book wassubmitted (as a D.Phil.thesis at Oxford),and sixteen years since itwas frst published. In the intervening period the field ofphilosophy of mind has grown and changed enormously, adevelopment that is perhaps made easier to see and appreciate by areconsideration of the way the problems looked(to me)in the late1960s. \nWhen I was working on the book, its resolute naturalism andearnest concern with what science could tell us about the mindstruck me as quite pioneering—or quite eccentric, depending onmy mood.Philosophers of mind made something of a fetish oftheir distance from any empirical investigations, except of the mostinformal linguistic sort.Times have changed. Now we havecognitive science. There are now more than a few philosophers ofmind who are vastly more knowledgeable about the brain than Iwas then(or am now).A fairly professional knowledge of theother cognitive sciences —psychology, artificial intelligence, linguistics —is now considered a virtual qualification forprofessional status in the discipline. \nSo what strikes me now about my book is not its pioneeringstand, for we are almost all naturalists today, but its intermittentnaiveté.This is mildly embarrassing, but not nearly so embarrassingas would be the discovery that I hadn’t managed to achieve anyadvance in outlook over the years. There are also the unalloyederrors,of course, and these are indeed embarrassing. In fact, theonly alterations to
