Evans and K. C. Lawson, framed as a curated introduction to poetry that is truly contemporary in spirit. The foreword argues that, despite an initial impression of difficulty, these poems offer immediate relevance through shared experiences and familiar modern themes such as trains, aeroplanes, and World War II. It emphasizes that modern verse should be read without misconceptions from older poetic conventions, transforming everyday scenes into newly significant experiences through surprising comparisons and perceptions.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/literature/","Literature",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/contemporary-verse-an-anthology/442917/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/contemporary-verse-an-anthology/442917.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"WPS_1790064749","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-11-06","2026-09-29",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":55},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",10,{"@type":57,"mainEntity":58},"FAQPage",[59,65,69],{"name":60,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":62},"What many virtues by means of thisselection. Here is verse that is truly contemporary in spirit:all the writers except four are still living, most of themyoung;and the poems deal either with themes of perennialinterest, such as the country-side and memories of childhood,or with such distinctively modern features as trains,aero-planes and the second world war.In either case, the choicehas been limited to poems in the contemporary idiom:modern poetry written according to the conventions ofEdwardian verse has not been included. \nThough much modern poetry may at first appear difficult, the fact that these poems are all contemporary should givethem a more immediate interest and also make a deeperunderstanding of them possible in the end.The poets, travelling on the same trains, walking the same streets andperplexed by the same problems as ourselves, present atti-tudes of mind which come directly home to us.The readingof modern poetry should be free from the misunderstand-ings which may give a false colour to our interpretation ofpoetry of other ages and conditions. We are apt to roman-ticize what is old merely because it is different. Here, thesubjects are often so familiar to us that they may seem com-monplace,but it is the power of the poetry in this book totransform the commonplace into new and lively experience.A bit of canal between two bridges,a junk stall in a market,a crying baby, become newly significant. The accurate andunexpected comparisons between boats and jellies, shadows \nand soapsuds,house-maids and vegetables, startle us intolooking with new eyes at what we may previously have takenfor granted, and show us a new world in familiar things. \nAnd this perhaps is the most important thing to be gainedfrom reading contemporary verse. There is a horrible ten-dency amongst calendar manufacturers to decry modern life.by locating romance only in a setting of stage coaches or oldworld gardens, and too many people accept this criticism ofour times. But these poets combat this nostalgia for the pastby discovering new experiences which may or may not bepleasurable but are always exciting among the most familiarcommonplaces of our mechanized world. It is surely some-thing to have made a bowler hat poetic. \nIt should be emphasized that this anthology is no morethan a first selection. Many notable omissions are inevitablein a book that aims to put at ease the shy or suspiciousvisitor;and consequently, although it is believed that all theverse in this selection is good, some major writers are repre-sented only slightly,or not at all. \nThe order of poems in an anthology must be a personalmatter, especially when,as in this case, the poems have beenselected on their individual merits and not because they fitany preconceived formula of subject or mood.Poems bear-ing some affinity to each other in subject or approach havebeen grouped together, and the transition from group togroup has been effected by logical association and,it ishoped, without too sudden change of mood. \nNo notes, other than those provided by the poets them-selves,have been included, since it is desired above all thingsto avoid that approach to poetry which consists in loadingthe mind with references or second-hand critical apprecia-tion.Poe","cbCaisFlAipL6SdL","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisFlAipL6SdL","pdf",2919347,104,"English","# FOREWORD","[{\"question\":\"What is the anthology’s
