among thosewho introduced political science to the Western world, but they are omitted because they are read in the Hu-manities course.Little is said here of Newton and Dar-win,except as their discoveries were applied to socialsciences, because their ideas are presented in the NaturalScience course. \nLONG W1TH the Manual for the Study of Contempo-八 … … rrary Civilization, this Source Book presents anotherrevision of the classroom materials for the course in Con-temporary Civilization given in Columbia College.Thesyllabus formerly employed in this course began withthese words by William James: \nYou can give humanistic value to almost anything by teachingit historically.Geology, economics, mechanics are humanitieswhen taught with reference to the successive achievements ofthe geniuses to which these sciences owe their being.Nottaught thus literature remains grammar, art a catalogue,his-tory a list of dates, and natural science a sheet of formulasand weights and measures. \nThis Source Book is a group enterprise, the product ofthe experience of many instructors who have taught, orare now teaching,Contemporary Civilization in Colum-bia College. The general nature and history of this enter-prise are described in the preface to the Manual.Theentire staff, and many of the students in the course, havecontributed to this work.Charles Frankel, under the di-rection of a committee of other instructors, has beengeneral editor of this Source Book, and to his labors arechiefly due the selection of texts and the preparation ofthe orientating introductions. He has also contributed thetranslations of Saint-Simon's Parable and Sieyès Whatis the Third Estate?.Robert Tschan has prepared Sec.III of Part I,including the translation of most of thetexts, and Eugene Golob has done a similar work forSec.VI of Part I.Ernest Nagel has prepared Sec.VII ofPart I and Sec.IV of Part II,as well as the material onShelley in Sec.II of Part II.With the exception of thematerial on Benjamin Franklin Donald W.OConnellis responsible for Sec.X of Part I and for the translationof Quesnay.G.Adolf Koch has contributed the transla-tions and introductions for von Ketteler and Bismarckin Sec.VI of Part II.Herbert W.Schneider wrote theintroductions to the Encyclicals and the report of theFederal Council of the Churches of Christ in Sec.VI ofPart II.Henry Magid provided the material on G.D.H.Cole,and Samuel I.Rosenberg on Adam Müller,includ-ing permission to use his unpublished translation ofMüller's work. \nThe present Source Book contributes to the projectimplicit in these remarks by allowing the student to ap-proach the making of contemporary civilization throughthe minds of those who helped make it.An importantaspect of any historical event or movement is the reflectiveinterpretation and justification of it by those who partici-pate in it.The classic literature of social theory is anessential ingredient of history as well as a heritage to us.Reflection upon society and history supplies both a pat-tern and a perspective for intelligent control.Such reflec-tion is impossible when detached from the tradition ofhuman thinking in which it is rooted and by which it isnourished. This Source Book is a collection of writingseach of which is a genuine source of contemporary civi-lization.These sources are not the conventional source-materials for historians,t","cbCainRrlU7KI5nw","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainRrlU7KI5nw","pdf",3994688,58,"English","# FOREWORD\n##
