Despite their contribution to the development of contemporary Arabic fiction, the authors discussed remain relatively unknown to the English-speaking reader. \nFabio Caiani examines the work of the Moroccan Muhammad Barrada, the Egyptian Idwar al-Kharrat, the Lebanese Ilyas Khuri and the Iraqi FuUad al-Takarli. Their most significant novels were published between 1979 and 2002, a period during which their work reached literary maturity. They all represent pioneering literary trends compared to the novelistic form canonized in the influential early works of Naguib Mahfouz. Until now, some of their most innovative works have not been analysed in detail – this book fills that gap. \nRelying on literary theory and referring to comparative examples from other literatures, this study places its findings within a wider framework – defining what is meant by innovation in the Arabic novel and the particular socio-political context in which it appears. \nThis book will enrich significantly the existing critical literature in English on the contemporary Arabic novel. \nFabio Caiani teaches Arabic in the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of St. Andrews. \nROUTLEDGE STUDIES IN MIDDLE EASTERN LITERATURES \nEditors \nJames E. Montgomery \nUniversity of Cambridge \nRoger Allen \nUniversity of Pennsylvania \nPhilip F. Kennedy \nNew York University \nRoutledge Studies in Middle Eastern Literatures is a monograph series devoted to aspects of the literatures of the Near and Middle East and North Africa, both modern and pre-modern. It is hoped that the provision of such a forum will lead to a greater emphasis on the comparative study of the literatures of this area, although studies devoted to one literary or linguistic region are warmly encouraged. It is the editors’ objective to foster the comparative and multi-disciplinary investigation of the written and oral literary products of this area. \n1.
