\nA look at history since the New Testamentera will reveal many periods of intensified evil.Of course, every generation of Christians haslooked out at its society and labeled it grosslyevil. That's to be expected because all non-Christian society is evil-bent.We usually are lim-ited in our comprehension of historical settings. An excellent example:Christians in some totali-tarian cultures presently are facing severe restric-tions and even persecutions. It would be easy forthem to conclude that they are passing throughthe great tribulation and that the second comingwill take place in a couple of years. The histori-cal setting of Western culture presently givescredence to Paul's instruction to Timothy. Therefore,it seems safe to conclude that we arein the last days before the return of Christ. \nIs there any way by which we could put thistext into a fuller historical setting? If Christiansof the past have proclaimed their days to be\"the last days,\"how can we avoid making simi-lar mistakes as to time-setting?Also,if ours aretruly\"the last days,\"how can we verify thisboth by Scripture and by our present historicalsetting? \nIn verse 13,Paul adds the factor that \"im-postors will go on from bad to worse.\"Ellicott says,\"We cannot indeed definitely \ninfer from this term that magical arts were actu-ally used by these impostors, but there is cer-tainly nothing in such a supposition inconsistenteither with the context, the primary meaning ofthe word,or the description of similar oppo-nents mentioned elsewhere in the New Testa-ment”(p.501). \nDoes present-day interest in the occult fit intothe fulfillment of this prophecy? How?If so,does this prove that Christ's second coming isexceptionally close at hand? \nSince an impostor is one who leads othersastray, and since we're seeing a considerableincrease in their number, watchfulness couldn'tbe more urgent. These impostors have deceptionas their purpose-to deceive-mainly becausethey are deceived.Who are the main targets oftheir deception? Can Christians become theirvictims? In what manner might this deceptioncome? What are the best ways to fortify oneselfagainst impostors? \nConsidering the words of Christ in Matthew \n24:37,\"As were the days of Noah,so will be thecoming of the Son of man,\"study through thesection on Matthew 24 in The Second ComingBible, verses 32-44(pp.346-49). \nBiederwolf points out the comparison be-tween the time of Noah and the second comingof Jesus Christ by saying it was \"not alone withthe ignorance of the exact time, but also withthe sudden and unexpected manner in which thetwo events took place”(pp.348-49). \n\"They lived in thoughtless security and grosssensuality”(p.349). \nIn somewhat of a contrast to the passage in ⅡTimothy, this seems to indicate that the compar-ison between the flood time and the secondcoming is not one of gross anti-God activity butis rather more one of God-neglect.The people inNoah's time were indulging in business as usual. They were unprepared for calamity. They wentaround\"eating and drinking, marrying andgiving in marriage, until the day when Noahentered the ark”(verse 38).There wasn't any-thing particularly spectacular about their rejec-tion of God's way;they simply lived as usual. But they were totally unprepared for the flood. \nThis,of course, can be coupled with the pas-sage in I Timothy. There is not a contradiction. We still can have living as usual coupled withadherence to the occult movements. In eithercase, people are totally unconcerned about thestatus of their lives before the living God \nIsn't it more difficult to determine if we arenearing the second coming by comparing to “asin the days of Noah”than ","cbCaiesP9RMETnWb","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiesP9RMETnWb","pdf",2907552,82,"English","# CONTEMPORABY DiSCUSSION SERIES\n## Intense evil across history and “last days” reasoning\n## Paul’s warning: impostors going from bad to worse\n## Present-day occult interest and prophecy fulfillment\n## Impostor deception: targets, risks, and fortification\n## Matthew 24 and “as were the days of Noah” comparison\n## Living as usual, God-neglect, and no contradiction\n## Attitudes for Christians and preparation for Christ’s coming\n# All This Talk About the Kingdom\n## Study guide review and kingdom meaning for twentieth-century Christians","[{\"question\":\"Why do Christians in different eras often think their society is the grossly evil time?\",\"answer\":\"The text explains that each generation has looked at its own society and labeled it grossly evil, which is expected because non-Christian society is described as evil-bent.
