Constructing an ldentity:Environmental Educators in Mexico\n\nSilvia Fuentes Amaya,Universidad Pedagógica Nacional Ajusco,Mexico \n## Abstract\n\nThe environmental education field in Mexico is a relatively new social spacecharacterized by wide discursive proliferation and organized by regionalhegemonies. In this context,a plurality of identification processes has takenplace. There is not a singular environmental educator identity but a multi-plicity of local definitions. In this paper;I focus on the case of the \nEnvironmental Educational Masters Program in Mexicali,Baja Californiafrom 1993 to 1999,where the ethical definition of environmental educatorwas naturalized as the sole true one.I trace the beginning of the field ofenvironmental education in Mexico, and the marks of pioneer discourse inthe professionalization of environmental education through this program.Iuse discourse analysis to consider the politics of inclusion/exclusion in aparticular ideal of the environmental educator identity. \nIs there really an environmental education field in Mexico? How is it under-stood,and what are the features that characterize it?Can we talk about theenvironmental educator's identity or should we think about different defi-nitional possibilities? \nThe Mexican environmental education field s a relatively new socialspace.Although since the early 70s international events have been organizedwherein the participants agreed upon and stressed the importance of envi-ronmental education, meeting those agreements has been a slow and diffi-cult process in Mexico. The ministry in charge of environmental issues,Secretaria de Desarrollo Urbano y Ecologia(SEDUE)[Secretary of Urban andEcological Development]),was created in the early 80s.In 1985 a specialoffice,Departamento de Educación Ambiental (Department of EnvironmentalEducation),was founded to develop this specific educational field. This con-stituted the first official attempt to deal with environmental education inMexico. \nIt is crucial to state that the field has been characterized by the presenceof a multiplicity of discoursesl entailing a wide range of processes,forms,sub-jects,and procedures that represent a huge range of meanings constructedaround the definition of what environmental education is or,rathe, what isthought it should be.The existence of this plurality of identities is the outcomeof political struggles.Hence,I argue that any definition of the environmen-tal educator identity is the result of a hegemonic practice, that is to say,it isthe product of a political and historical attempt to define its meaning.Thereis no essential environmental education professional identity, but ratherthere has been a certain naturalization process. \nIn this paper,I will deal with a specific area of the Mexican environmentaleducation field, the professionalisation of environmental educators, and I willfocus primarily on ","cbCaipfAgGWMXAyb","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipfAgGWMXAyb","pdf",789050,14,"English","# Abstract\n# Searching
