normal surroundings thepatient carries a residual physical handicap ofvarying degree. When circumstances lead to ashortening of the period of convalescent care orto lessened attcntion during the period of acuteillness, this handicap is heightened;withchronic illness, the problem is much morecomplex. \nHE SIGHT or even the thought of a childwho is unable to run and play is sure tostrike a responsive notc of sympathy.Thereare other children, however, who are as badlyhandicapped by disease and whose needs arefully as great who have failed to receive aswidespread attention because their disabilitiesare not apparent to the observer. It is impor-tant that consideration be given to all childrenwith handicaps due to disease or to deformity. \n工 \nChronic illnesses differ widely in their nature, cause, and residual effect on the patient.Somediseases appear insidiously and may have beenoperative for weeks or even for years beforetheir existence is suspected. The child withtuberculous infection usually offers no physicalevidence of disease until months or years haveelapsed. The child born of syphilitic parentsmay appear free from disease until midchild-hood,when the development of severe damageto the eyes, the central nervous system,or otherarea leads to recognition of his infectcd state. In the two diseases just cited the continuance ofinfection over periods of ycars is the rule, evenwith early recognition and adequate treatment. If lis vital organs have been damaged the pa-tient often carries his infirmity throughout life, even though the causative disease has been curedor arrested. \nThe pediatrist's interests are directed towardthe child as a whole rather than toward hisphysical disability. The child specialist's workbrings him into contact chiefly with childrenwhose handicaps may be termed medical ratherthan physical—children with chronic diseasethat directly or indirectly interferes with theirnormal participation in life. The same col1-siderations,however,will apply basically to allchildren with chronic physical disability. \nIf all illnesses were acute,self-limited proc-esses,problems of care would be simplifiedgreatly.During the time of the child's acuteillness his obvious disability makes his need forcare apparent to all and effort is made to pro-tect him.Even though such illness may preci-pitate an economic crisis in the home, the emer-gency usually will be met in one way or another. If the child makes a complete recovery, heusually will","cbCaimtlUPjK5CfK","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimtlUPjK5CfK","pdf",1797968,24,"English","# Conservation
