HomePage Debuts onWorld Wide Web \nJeanne Sohn,Paul Kobulnicky,Dick Akeroyd \nWe are pleased to announce theopening of the Connecticut Gov-ernment Information Home Page. The page was formally opened onthe World Wide Web,June 1,1995 at the following URL: \nhttp://www.csu.ctstateu.edu/state/statedemo.html \nThis page has been jointly devel-oped by the Connecticut State Uni-versity,the University of Connecti-cut,and the Connecticut State Li-brary.We are introducing it as ademonstration project and modelfor what we hope will become the\"official\"site on the Web for com-prehensive access to Connecticutgovernment information at boththe state and local levels. \nIn its initial presentation, the pageis arranged according to the fol-lowing categories: \n■ Government/Law, \n■ Health/Social Services, \n■Education, \nContinued on page 7 \n# CONNECTICUTLIBRARIESA Publication ofThe Connecticut Library Association\n\nLibrary Legislative Day in D.C. \n(from lef)Peter Chase,Pat Owens,Sandy Ruoff,Jan Day and Helen Stauderman at theLibrary of Congress. \nPeter Chase and Sandy Rouff \nCensorship on the Internet, blockgrants, bucks for libraries, and the Li-brary Services and Technology Actwere all on the agenda May 9 when adelegation from CLA joined librariansfrom across the country in Washington \nD.C.to lobby for libraries. The delega-tion included:CLA president,Jan Day;Legislative Committee,co-chairs,PeterChase and Sandy Rouff;HelenStauderman from the Mark Twain Li-brary;Pat Owens from the State Li-brary;and Sidney Postol from the Asso-ciation of Connecticut Library Boards. The delegation visited all eight ofConnecticut's,representatives andsenators.Marietta Johnson,CLA's rep-resentative to ALA,made all the ar-rangements and appointments for thetrip. \nCLA urged passage of The Library Ser-vices and Technology Act,whichwould replace and simplify the presentLibrary Services and Construction Act.Connecticut will receive $1,631,177from LSCA funds this yearBlockgrants have also been proposed for li-braries and are supported by ALA.Presently the federal government gives$.57 per person for libraries, the del-egates urged Connecticut's members ofCongress to give $1.00 per person aspart of the“Pass a Buck for Libraries”campaign.Delegates opposed theExxon-Gorton“Communications De-cency Act,\"which could lead to cen-sorship of private online communica-tions on the Internet. \nAll the delegates agreed that it was anexhausting day but worth the effort.Several aides to Connecticut’s mem-bers of Congress noted that it was cru-cial for librarians to come in person toWashington to lobby for libraries.四 \nOpinion \nmore computer-based type of informa-tion accessibility. This does not meanless of a focus on books, but rather anawareness that information can be se-cured by various mechanisms. \n## Library Friend AsAdvocate\n\nJack Short \nAs less and less support comes fromthe federal and state level,it is urgentto establish a stronger source of fund-ing from your local officials. \nLibrary Friends have the capacity toeffect a monumental change in theperception of the library in their townsand cities—a change that is desper-ately needed because most local gov-ernments give only nickel and dimesupport to this most vital institution intheir community. \nDo you know what the per capita sup-port of your library is this year?Do youknow how many citizens in your com-munity are using the library?(Not justthe number of library card holders butactual circulation use of both childrenand adults.)Are there valid figures onreference desk use? \nA town willoften give annual supportof $7,000 per child for that individual'sschool education, while at the samemoment give only $18.00 in publiclibrary support for that same child. \nWorking hand in hand with the libraryboard and director,Friends represent-ing vast segments of the communitymust focus on increased per capitasupport at the local level. You have thepower to mandate increased librarysupport.Attend town meet","cbCaimBVpMCFfOeW","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimBVpMCFfOeW","pdf",2534349,"English","# Library Legislative Day in D.C.\n## Library
