The opening scene moves from a quiet evening balcony to a late-night bar, where drinking becomes a way to cut through confusion and reclaim a sense of clarity. The chapter closes with an at-home confrontation that exposes the strain carried into daily relationships. Through intimate voice, it depicts grief’s delayed decay and rage’s slow return.","Also by Joan Thatiah \nThings I Will Tell My Daughter (2016) \nI’m Too Pretty to Be Broke (2017) \nLetters to My Son (2018) \nDamn, Girl! Below me, jacaranda petals littered the driveway like someone had scattered bits of purple sky. The air was thick with the smell of grilled meat from someone’s electric jiko two balconies down, and that crisp, dry scent Nairobi gets just before it rains. I could hear the muffled hum of traffic on Oloitoktok Road, occasional laughter from neighbours I didn’t know, and the distant whine of a blender in someone’s kitchen. \nA cold Tusker sat sweating on the balcony table, next to my untouched plate of pilau. I had just come from the shower. I was fresh, calm, maybe even a little bored. \nThen the phone rang. “Mother” flashed on the screen. I let it ring three times before I answered. \n“Hello?” \nShe didn’t greet me. Her breath was ragged, as if she’d been running.“Baba yako amejinyonga.” \nThere was no preamble, no warning and no gentle landing. Just the thud. For a second, I thought I hadn’t heard her right. I sat up straighter, my bare feet now planted firm on the cold balcony tiles. My chest didn’t tighten; my eyes didn’t blur. All I felt was stillness. An odd quietness inside me, like when a noisy fridge finally shuts off. \n“Is he dead?” I asked. \n“He killed himself, Sawe,” she said, her voice thin.“He did it in the store atthe back of the house. He used a bed-sheet.” \nA beat passed. I could hear a chicken clucking in the background, maybe a radio, and a voice asking something in a low voice. I looked out at the city spread beneath me, lights beginning to blink alive across the skyline. Somewhere far off, a siren howled. A breeze passed, cool and clean. I took along sip from the Tusker bottle. \n“Okay,” I said. \nS","cbCailzueU7aafBl","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCailzueU7aafBl","pdf",1921983,150,"English","en",105,"# Contents\n## MEN\n### One: Just Press Record\n### Two: A Flicker of Mad Hope\n### Three: A mango tree in the backyard\n### Four: Soft words, hard time\n### Five: Just one more bet\n### Six: The boy with an obsession with dinosaurs\n## WOMEN\n### Seven: Mchungaji Reuben’s wife\n### Eight: The taste of metal in my mouth\n### Nine: A woman of the red thigh\n### Ten: Proof of life\n### Eleven: Trapped in my mind\n### Twelve: My sister ’s husband\n# One\n## Just press record","[{\"question\":\"What triggers the events at the start of the chapter?\",\"answer\":\"The narrator answers a call from her mother telling her that her father has killed himself.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the narrator react immediately after hearing the news?\",\"answer\":\"She initially feels relieved and peaceful, but the relief later rots into rage that rises slowly.\"},{\"question\":\"What does the narrator do after hanging up, and who confronts them at home?\",\"answer\":\"She goes out to a bar and continues drinking, then returns home where Milly asks where she has been and challenges her late-night behavior.\"}]","Confessions of Nairobi Men and Women -
