Nation-al Catholic Rural Life Conference has been emphasizinga why-to-do-it program.Perhaps it does not matter where westart with the how,the what,or the why,but somewhere ineverything we do,the question“Why am I doing it”should beasked. \nHow does this work out in practice?Joe Frank decides to buyanother 100 acres. He finds out how—where the money is com-ing from—and what—which hundred acres—and then why. \nThe first thought that comes to mind is that Frank feels hecan farm 300 acres as well as 200.Secondly,it will reduce theoverhead on the capital investment.Third,it will bring in a littlemore money. These are important considerations, but there areothers, too. \nHe has an older son coming up.This will be a good start forhim. If not, will this addition make his wife and youngsters doa lot of extra work around the home front—chores, feeding, etc.?Will this hundred really pay off?Has he checked withthe economists, measured it carefully from every angle?Per-haps it will make him neglect the other 200 acres, and less in-tensive farming on the 300 acres may bring him the same re-turn as on his present 200. \nPerhaps the why is contained in a vain desire just to be bigger,or at least as big as his neighbor.Perhaps he feels this is theonly way the family farm will be preserved—by having a unitthat is large enough for good, honest competition.Or since theland is available,he would rather have it in his hands and inthe hands of his sons than in the hands of strangers from otherparts. \nIn any event a careful analysis of the pros and cons in thewhy area is revealing and also indicative of whether the decisionis good or bad in the long run. \nOn the other hand, perhaps Bill Jones wants to sell his farm. Here again the why is important.\"My family will be better off.\"\"Farming does not pay.”“I can make more in other work.\"\"Farming is hard work.”“There is no future in farming.\"\"Icould not afford to turn down the price.\"But—has he askedsome other questions, such as,\"Can I raise my family better inanother occupation?”\"Will I be more secure in another occupa-tion?”\"Have I investigated thoroughly the advantages and dis-advantages of this move-and is my‘why’objective and true?” \nThe best thing to do when important decisions are being madeis to list all the\"why\"reasons in
