Eighth Avenue,Vancouver 10,B.C. \nP8563R48C \nFirst Printing October,1966 \n# Preface\n\nA \nT THE beginning of the thirties, when Iwas embarking on my own work of trans-lating the Icelandic poets,Harold Griffin was ayoung reporter on the Regina Leader-Post,towhose editorial rooms I was an occasional visitor.Had we known it,we were both writing poetryand finding in it our avenue of protest against thehardship and social injustice of the depression.Idid not meet him, however, until two or threeyears later in Vancouver. When I did,I was imme-diately impressed by his personality, his deep in-sight into the problems of human affairs and thefelicity of his language. \nBy that time,Griffin had spent a year in theYukon, where he acquired a love for the norththat provided the material for his first publishedprose work and some of his earlier poems. He hadalso travelled in Latin America and the West Indies, including a visit to Machado's Cuba, where he wasappalled by the oppression and the extremes ofwealth and poverty —an experience recalled yearslater in his long poem Cuba in this selection. \nWhat distinguishes Griffin's work in his deeplove of country and abiding faith in people against \nall forms of tyranny and injustice. In him thepoet's vision is fused with the historian's under-standing.Although this is his first volume ofpoetry,it is representative of his work over 30years and reflects the consistency of his philosophythroughout a period of great change. \nAs music is to the phenomenon of sound, sopoetry is to thought and feeling. It is the languageof the heart as well as the head, the embodimentof personal philosophy that can evoke universalresponse.Throughout the centuries the poets whobest expressed the thought of their times are re-membered when all but the most exceptional oftheir literary contemporaries are forgotten.Andso it is,I think, that Griffin's name will endurelongest through the impact of these poems pre-cisely because they epitomize thoughts that areshaping our world. \nI am a traditionalist in poetry. My personaltaste is perhaps singular and undoubtedly the mod-ernists,for whom I have not yet developed anappreciation, dub me as old-fashioned.Be that asit may,Grifin's work in both traditional and mod-ern form will stand on its own merits, not the leastof which is his use of vivid symbolism to accom-plish a clear intent.
