48:06 \n3 \nWomen and the 191st... \nHow did women and their special concernsfare at the 191st General Assembly last May?Perhaps the best way to find the answer is tolook at the record. Here are some things thathappened—or did not happen—in relation towomen and to the particular issues theybrought to the Assembly. \n(-)Again this year, women commissionerswere outnumbered by their male counter-parts.Out of a total of 629 commissioners, only 141 were women, and only 15 of thesewere clergywomen. \n(+)Six of the fifteen G.A.committee chair-persons appointed by Moderator HowardRice were women (three elders and threeclergy). \n(+)The UPCUSA/PCUS Women's Center, locatedin the middle of the exhibit area, was ahub of activity throughout the Assembly.Printed resource materials were dispensedalong with personal assistance in interpretingwomen's issues. \n(+)A daily newspaper,WOMEN Together:PCUS/UPCUSA was published. \n(-)Sexist language and overemphasis onmale leadership of worship services weredisturbing to many women—and men! \n(+)The UPW-initiated resolution urging aboycott of the Nestle Company was approvedby a huge majority (see Newsfold,p.6). \n(+)A resolution favoring restoration ofpublic funding for medically safe abortioncare and opposing legislative attempts to banabortions was approved by a two-to-onemargin. \n(+)A paper titled “The Power of LanguageAmong the People of God”was received bythe Assembly and recommended as a studyfor congregations. This paper deals withinclusiveness in the language people use toexpress their faith and was strongly advocated \nA.D./James E.Solheim \nby UPW and the Council on Women and theChurch (COWAC). \n(+)A proposal that “every congregationshallelect men and women as officers\"becamepart of our church's constitution at thisGeneral Assembly after having been ap-proved by a majority of the 152 presbyteries.(-)A proposal to establish a Committee onInclusiveness was defeated by a narrowmargin. The vote came at a late-night hourwith over one hundred commissioners absentfrom the floor. This proposed committeewould have functioned at ail judicatory levels, giving special attention to fair representationregardless of racial or ethnic origin, sex, marital status, age or disability. \n(+)A paper from the Council on Women andthe Church titled\"Rape and Violence AgainstWomen\"was approved. \n(+)Continued support for the ratification ofthe Equal Rights Amendment passed easily.(+)The Permanent Judicial Commissionannounced another ruling against ministerialcandidates who do not support the ordina-tion of women. \n(+)The General Assemblies of the PCUS andthe UPCUSA both approved the establish-ment of a Joint Committee on Women todevelop a plan for women's program andorganizations in the reunited church.BothAssemblies adopted a resolution affirmingthat\"as a condition of church Union, theprogress made in the struggle against racismand sexism will not bereversed or sacrificed.\" \nThere were no spectacular breakthroughsfor women at this General Assembly, andsome of the ","cbCaiilrms4Ch4fh","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiilrms4Ch4fh","pdf",2501743,11,"English","# Women and the 191st...\n## Representation of women at the assembly\n## Resolutions and papers recommended for study\n## Language, leadership, and inclusiveness outcomes\n## Church governance and committee actions","[{\"question\":\"How were women represented among commissioners at the 191st General Assembly?\",\"answer\":\"Of 629 commissioners, 141 were women, and only 15 of those were clergywomen.\"},{\"question\":\"What role did women’s centers and related publications play during the assembly?\",\"answer\":\"The UPCUSA/PCUS Women’s Center operated as a hub for printed materials and personal assistance, and a daily newspaper titled WOMEN Together: PCUS/UPCUSA was published.\"},{\"question\":\"Which advocacy and resolutions were approved regarding language and inclusiveness?\",\"answer\":\"A paper titled “The Power of Language Among the People of God” was received and recommended for congregational study, while a proposal to establish a Committee on Inclusiveness was narrowly defeated.\"}]","CONCERN Magazine/Newsfold - Women and the 191st | PDF",1790633591,28]
