\nThe subject of hunger and need in the worldis a nagging one.In our fast-paced,everything-in-abundance society,we can try to ignore thedesperation around us;but the persistent knowl-edge of the need remains. At a study/fellowshipmeeting where the group was discussing theparable,in Luke, about the rich man who is sentto hell because he ignores—or rather fails tosee—the beggar at his door,I shared a personalexperience about dealing with beggars.I wishI could tell you I handled the situation betterthan the rich man, especially considering hispunishment, but I cannotFor if the rich mandidn't give because he just didn't notice,I wasmuch worse;I saw the need and chose to ignoreit—and that is a decision I must deal with, justas 1 must deal with living a comfortable life now, knowing the hunger and need that exist. \nIn 1972 we were transferred with Kaiser Alu-minum to Ghana,West Africa. One of my firstexperiences was a shopping trip to the capitalcity of Accra. The day was hot, probably 95degrees and 90 percent humidity. That was ashock to my system, having just come from cool, rainy Tacoma. But the next shock was seeingreal beggars. They ususally congregated be-tween the parking lots and the department storesbecause that was where the wealthy shopped—and by Ghanian standards,we were wealthybeyond imagination.Amid the heat, dust andsmells, the beggars were a heartrending sight—men, women and some children, with bodiesmaimed or crippled, some with missing limbsor eyes, some with open and oozing sores thatthe flies crawled on.And I remember beingfilled with pity.My first reaction was to pull outsome change and drop it into several cups as Iwent past. But the sound of those coins was likea signal.I was immediatelysurrounded;the beg-gars pushed in on me and rattled their cups andbegged. At that moment,I didn't think aboutJesus'example and love for the diseased anddestitute,or his command to feed the hungryand clothe the naked.I felt only revulsion andpanic, and I escaped as quickly as I could. \nOne of the mostconstructive ways forUnited Presbyterians toexpress Christiancompassion forsuffering and needypeople is to contributeto One Great Hourof Sharing. \nThere began my education on how to handlebeggars. My teachers were other women whohad been living in Ghana and had learned tocope. But their solution, which became my so-lution,certainly was not Christian. The ruleswere simple:1)never make eye contact;2)walkpast quickly as if they do not exist;and 3)nevergive to one because\"you cannot possibly giveto
