The editor frames a seasonal response from readers and explains how diverse opinions can be addressed through four guidelines: identify known facts, clarify underlying values, recognize the relevant community, and evaluate the intended purpose by maximizing good and minimizing evil. The illustrated case asks whether a local association should fund mission through raffling a locally donated quilt, including considerations around chance, policy, sacrificial giving, and how mission might be affected.",{"@graph":14,"@context":76},[15,34,55],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/literature/","Literature",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/concern-magazine-ethical-decision-guidelines-upw-ordination-breakfast/567674/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/concern-magazine-ethical-decision-guidelines-upw-ordination-breakfast/567674.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"Sarah hand,a reader in Duarte,California,said,\"The issue was the best ever publishedby CONCERN.\"On the other hand,a reader in Ledge-wood,New Jersey,wrote,\"I wish to resign from UPWand do not want any more copies of CONCERN sent tomy home.\" \nAs editor I wonder how,as members of the samehousehold of faith,we can come to hold such diverseopinions. Why do we feel so strongly about them?Surelythey are related to the way we make decisions. In thisshort spacel want to present four guidelines for makingan ethical decision. It is my hope that this approach willkeep us together even if we disagree, enliven dialogueand increase understanding.I have concocted an issuewhich I think is mildly controversial so that we can seeconcretely how this four-fold approach works and thenon our own we can apply it to weightier issues. \nThe question I've chosen for illustration is:Should alocal association raise money for mission by raffling offa quilt donated by a quilter in the area? \nThe first step is to determine the known facts in thesituation. The facts in this case are simple.A raffle is agame of chance. While the quilt will cost nothing,UPWwill be involved in promotion and printing and sellingtickets. The donor is asking UPW to give her a $175statement-of-worth for income tax purposes.UPW hopesto sell three hundred chances at $1 each.Monies raisedwill go toward the association's pledge to the presbyterialfor the mission of the church. \nThe second step is to clarify underlying values in thedecision-making process. Some values may have alreadybeen established:perhaps the church or UPW has apolicy about holding raffles.Other questions of value thatmight be explored are:Is it good to pursue a methodthat will raise money from persons who might not havethe slightest interest in mission, but would like to ownthe quilt? Is second-mile giving-the principle that eachwoman makes a sacificial gift beyond her regular churchgiving-being enhanced or subverted by a rafle? Will theinterpretation of mission be overshadowed by the quilt? \nThe third step is to recognize the community in whichthe decision is made.We all have certain communitiesto which we give our allegiance-the family,friends,church,nation-to name a few.And these loyalties canbe at odds with each other.Does it make a differencethat a community of believers, not the garden club, wishes to hold a raffle?Does it influence our decision-making to know that our mother always opposed gamesof chance? Are we willing to move from one loyalty toanother? \nThe fourth step is to consider what the purpose is wewish to achieve.Already we have the purpose of UPW,but we can push even fur","cbCail79R1tR8nCI","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCail79R1tR8nCI","pdf",3465462,15,"English","# Focus\n## Reader responses
