This is because market data is shared across various organisations, and the data collected by one can be critical to the efficient operation of another. \nMany organisations operate in the non-household water market. Some are data owners, responsible for updating data items on market entities, while others use the central data collected to serve customers. For this reason, all need to work to the same central market data model. This consistent data model has informed the design of both the central market systems, and the systems and processes that trading parties and other stakeholders use to interact with CMOS. \nThe consistent market data model was a pre-requisite to market opening and can be considered a significant achievement for the water industry. Regional wholesalers, that had previously represented the same realworld entities in their own siloed regional systems and processes, were now required to work to a single national model, to serve the new national retailers operating across multiple wholesaler regions. \nAs operator of the non-household water market, MOSL has oversight of core market data entities and relationships and has continued to enrich this core market data to drive the market forward. This has been underpinned by our commitments outlined in MOSL’s Data Insight Improvement programme, which included the publication of several market data models. \nThis document details the highest-level Conceptual Data Model for the following MOSL products: \n􀀶 CMOS: The Central Market Operating System (CMOS) is the core IT system for the non-household market. CMOS manages all the electronic transactions involved in switching customers and provides water usage and settlement data \n􀀶 Bilateral hub: The Bilateral hub supports all interactions between wholesalers and retailers by using a system of services that allow the submission and processing of bilateral service requests. \nIf you have any questions on the document or the data models provided, please email [performance@mosl.co.uk](performance@mosl.co.uk). \nWhat is a Data Model? \nA Data Model is a visual representation of either a whole information system or parts of it to communicate the connections between data points. Data modelling supports developers, data architects and analysts to view and understand the relationships between data in a database, information system or data warehouse. There are three types of data models – Conceptual, Logical and Physical data models. In this document we will be focusing on the Conceptual Data Model. \nThe Conceptual Data Model depicts market entities and activities and how these relate to each other. Conceptual models provide an overview of what a system contains, how it will be organised and what the business rules are in managing data. \nFor MOSL, this covers the data flow between entities such as supply points, meters, meter reads, trading parties and more, providing a holistic view of how these entities interrelate as one large ecosystem. In this document, a conceptual entity relationship model and diagram have been followed. \nThe three basic tenants of a Conceptual Data Model are: \n􀀶 An entity: A real-world object \n􀀶 An attribute: Characteristics or properties of an entity \n􀀶 A relationship: Dependency or association between two entities. \nWe have also outlined Logical Data Models for the Bilateral hub, the Medium Volume Interface (MVI) and MOSL’s internal data warehouse.
