\nRCHITECTURETHIRD EDITION \nM.Morris Mano \nThis book deals with computer architecture as well as computer organizationand design.Computer architecture is concerned with the structure and behav-ior of the various functional modules of the computer and how they interactto provide the processing needs of the user.Computer organization is con-cerned with the way the hardware components are connected together to forma computer system.Computer design is concerned with the development ofthe hardware for the computer taking into consideration a given set of specifica-tions. \nThe book provides the basic knowledge necessary to understand thehardware operation of digital computers and covers the three subjects associ-ated with computer hardware.Chapters 1through 4present the various digitalcomponents used in the organization and design of digital computers.Chap-ters 5 through 7 show the detailed steps that a designer must go through inorder to design an elementary basic computer.Chapters8through 10 deal withthe organization and architecture of the central processing unit.Chapters 11and12 present the organization and architecture of input-output and memory.Chapter 13 introduces the concept of multiprocessing. The plan of the book isto present the simpler material first and introduce the more advanced subjectslater. Thus, the first seven chapters cover material needed for the basic under-standing of computer organization, design, and programming of a simpledigital computer. The last six chapters present the organization and architec-ture of the separate functional units of the digital computer with an emphasison more advanced topics. \nThe material in the third edition is organized in the same manneras in thesecond edition and many of the features remain the same. The third edition, however, offers several improvements over the second edition. All chaptersexcept two(6 and 10)have been completely revised to bring the material up todate and to clarify the presentation. Two new chapters were added:chapter 9on pipeline and vector processing, and chapter 13 on multiprocessors.Twosections deal with the reduced instruction set computer(RISC).Chapter 5 hasbeen revised completely to simplify and clarify the design of the basic com-puter.New problems have been formulated for eleven of the thirteen chapters. \nThe physical organization of a particular computer including its registers, \nxvi Preface \nthe data flow, the microoperations, and control functions can be describedsymbolically by means of a hardware description language. In this book wedevelop a simple register transfer language and use it to specify various com-puter operations in a concise and precise manner. The relation of the registertransfer language to the hardware organization and design of digital computersis fully explained. \nThe book does not assume prior knowledge of computer hardware andthe material can be understood without the need of prerequisitesHowever, some experience in assembly language programming with a microcomputerwill make the material easier to understand.Chapters 1 through 3 can beskipped if the reader is familiar with digital logic design. \nThe following is a brief description of the subjects that are covered ineachchapter with an emphasis on the revisions that were made in the third edition. \nChapter 1 introduces the fundamental knowledge needed for the designof digital systems constructed with individual gates and flip-flops.It coversBoolean algebra, combinational circuits, and sequential circuits. This providesthe necessary background for understanding the digital circuits to bepresented. \nChapter 2 explains in detail the logical operation of the most commonstandard digital components. It includes decoders, multiplexers, registers, counters, and memories. These digital components are used as building blocksfor the design of larger units in the chapters that follow. \nChapter 3 shows how the various data rypes found in digital computersare represented in binary for","cbCaikw5VsXck44A","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikw5VsXck44A","pdf",30229295,524,"English","# Preface\n## Scope
