Computer-aided design,visualized\n\nsimulation and verification of relay ladderdiagrams in sequential control systems \nG.Vafeidis,S.Manesis \nDepartment of Electrical Engineering,Division of Systemsand Control,University of Patras,GR 26001 Patras,Greece \n## Abstract\n\nA computer-aided design program has been developed to design and test relayladder diagrams used in industrial applications.By using a personal computerthe engineer can develop and extensively test and alter a relay ladder diagrambefore installing it in the industry. The program can simulate the operation ofa diagram, while the user can select the visualized operation to be performedeither in real time mode or in a step-by-step procedure. In order to establishthe proper operation of the sequential control system, the program has also averification part which checks sequential logic for various scenarios of inputsand determines possible errors. \n## 1 Introduction\n\nProgrammable Logic Controllers(PLCs)are extensively used in factoryautomation.Almost every factory has a number of PLCs that control varioussubprocesses. One of the most important tasks of the engineer is to programall these PLCs.The first step that an engineer has to follow in order toprogram a PLC is to design a relay ladder diagram. We must distinguish therelay ladder program which is a Boolean-based PLC program, from the relayladder diagram or circuit which is the very first form of a Relay Logicsequential control system. An example that illustrates the difference betweenthese two is shown in Figure 1. \nThe student or the engineer in many cases starts to design a sequentialcontrol system first in relay ladder circuit form and then translates it in aPLC program.Various programming languages are available for PLCs such asBoolean,Relay Ladder Logic,Function Chart and Grafcet [1][5].The engineerneeds a software package that can help him to design easily and efficientlythe ladder diagram and test it thoroughly. He should be able to simulate itoff-line and make all the necessary changes so that the diagram can fit to his \n258 Visualization and Intelligent Design in Engineering \nspecifications.Then,he can safely install it without loosing any time testing itand modifying it.The verification section of the program can also help himto determine any undesired operational errors that may have missed.Themain purpose for which the program was originally developed is also to helpstudents to design and test relay ladder circuits, since they can't realize andoperate them in an industrial environment. \n(b) \n(a) \nFigure 1:(a)Relay Ladder diagram (b)Relay Ladder program \nAfter relative search, there has not been found anything similar in thesoftware market to simulate relay ladder circuits.Until now, software toolsfor testing and verification are available only for PLC programs written inLadder or Statement List languages.A method based on colored Petri netsand timed Petri nets has been proposed for the development of sequencecontrol programs. This K-NET [2]has an editor, simulator, generator, reporterand monitor to support the control program development procedure. \nIn contrast to the lack of software that tests relay ladder diagrams, other methods that substitute ladder logic diagrams have been developed. They have proved more powerful and have more possibilities like electricfault location and machine trouble diagnosis.Such a method is the SequentialFunction Chart [3].It is very important for a control system to be reliable andsafe when it is used in crucial applications. An automatic verification methodhas been developed for PLCs [4][6],in order to test the safety and reliabilityof a control system. The verification section of the program is also applied torelay ladder programs. \n## 2 Program Description\n\nHardware Requirements \nThe program was developed in such a way that it needs the minimum systemrequirements. It needs an Intel 286 based personal computer or greater with atleast 1 MB RAM and running DOS operating system(3.","cbCaipaLN5Qrnc0o","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipaLN5Qrnc0o","pdf",488342,"English","#
