Central to this process is comprehension monitoring, a metacognitive skill that enables readers to recognize whether understanding is occurring, detect breakdowns in comprehension, and apply appropriate corrective strategies. This study provides a theoretical and descriptive examination of comprehension monitoring within the field of reading and educational psychology. It explores the concept of comprehension monitoring as grounded in metacognitive theory, clarifying its key elements, components, and forms, including awareness of understanding, detection and evaluation of comprehension failure, and regulation through fix-up strategies.\nThe study further traces the historical development of comprehension monitoring from early cognitive views of reading as reasoning to its formalization within metacognitive frameworks. It examines both the advantages and disadvantages of comprehension monitoring, highlighting its role in enhancing reading comprehension, self-regulated learning, strategic flexibility, and learner motivation, while also addressing limitations such as cognitive load demands, metacognitive illusions, developmental constraints, instructional dependency, and assessment challenges. In addition, the study reviews major instructional techniques used to develop comprehension monitoring, including think-aloud protocols, self-questioning, reciprocal teaching, directed reading–thinking activity, collaborative strategic reading, SQ3R, graphic organizers, annotation, and fix-up strategies, emphasizing the importance of explicit instruction and gradual release of responsibility.\nBy synthesizing established theoretical perspectives and research findings, this study underscores the critical role of comprehension monitoring in effective reading comprehension and learner independence. The findings contribute to a clearer conceptual understanding of comprehension monitoring and offer a theoretical foundation to inform future instructional practices and research in reading comprehension.\nTable of Contents\nSection One\n1.1 Introduction\nReading comprehension is purposeful, active processing which includes creating meaning, assessing information and regulating one's own processes.
