These three volumes are a comprehensive collection of Seki’s works based on the latest findings by four specialists who have spent more than 20 years of research on related historical documents and analysis on Seki’s accomplishments.  \nRecommended for researchers, universities, and libraries as the fundamental work for understanding traditional Japanese mathematics.  \nLanguage: Japanese  \nOrigin of Japanese mathematics. During the Edo period, from the 17th to the 19th century, a distinct paradigm of mathematics developed in Japan, differing from the ones known today. The influence of Suan xue qi meng (Arithmetic Enlightenment, 1299), written by Zhu Shijie of the Yuan Dynasty in China, and Suan fa tong zong (Arithmetic Treatise, 1592), written by Cheng Dawei of the Ming Dynasty in China, was significant. In addition to these works, Seki learned Yang Hui’s Yang Hui suan fa (Yang Hui Arithmetic) from the Southern Song Dynasty, which led to the rapid development of mathematics in Japan.  \nSeki’s mathematical works. Seki took over and considerably developed traditional Chinese mathematics. Seki was the first mathematician from the cultural sphere of Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and other cultures adopting Chinese characters, who believed in the necessity of general theory. He devised a method for writing down on paper equations with many unknowns, and independently of Leibniz, introduced the determinant and completed the general theory of eliminating unknowns in simultaneous higher-order equations and the theory of resultant ahead of Western mathematics. Equations, which had been seen only as tools for solving problems, became the subject of mathematical research by him. He completed the numerical solution of equations using the synthetic division before Ruffini and Horner. He attempted to construct the theory of equations. He also devised an interpolation method, introduced Seki-Bernoulli numbers independently of Bernoulli, and obtained a power-sum formula. In number theory, he completed the general solution method for simultaneous congruences. In numerical computation, he originated Aitken’s acceleration method. He applied it to calculate , arc length, and the volume of a sphere. His desire for general theory is found in many of his other achievements.  \nSeki’s life. Seki was a retainer of the Kofu Tokugawa family and the head of the procurement section. He acted as an intermediary for the incoming confectionery merchants. He was also responsible for the promotion and personnel affairs of the staff under his charge. In addition to his responsibilities as procurement and accountant, he inspected land within the Kofu domain. He established borders with neighboring countries using knowledge of mathematics and surveying. In 1704, when Tsunatoyo Tokugawa, lord of the Kofu domain, became the successor to Tsunayoshi Tokugawa, the fifth shogun, Seki was promoted to be a retainer directly under the shogunate from that of a local feudal lord, the last of his career.  \nAbout Each Volume  \nVolume 1: Modern Translations.  \nConsists ofa general introduction, translations of Seki’s works into modern Japanese, a chronological table, and a glossary. The general introduction summarizes the latest findings on Seki’s life, writings, and mathematics.
