This randomized controlled three-arm parallel study compared Tell-Show-Do (TSD) with Bach Flower Therapy (BFT) and thaumaturgy (TH) in 90 children aged 6–12 years. Anxiety was assessed pre and postintervention using facial image scale and pulse oximeter measures, with behavior rated using NCBRS. TH showed the greatest reduction in facial image scale scores, followed by BFT and TSD.","ORIGINAL RESEARCH \nComparison ofThaumaturgy and Bach Flower Therapy in Alleviating Dental Anxiety among Children Aged 6–12 Years: A Randomized Controlled Study \nShital Kiran Davangere Padmanabh1, Vishakha Bhausaheb Gangurde2 \nReceived on: 25 February 2025; Accepted on: 31 July 2025; Published on: 14 October 2025 \nabstract \nBackground: Tell-Show-Do (TSD), a common technique based on informing and preparing the child, sometimes works; alternative approaches such as Bach Flower Therapy (BFT) and thaumaturgy (TH) offer promise. Both methods aim to address the emotional side of anxiety. \nAim: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of BFT and TH in reducing dental anxiety in children aged between 6 and 12. \nMaterials and methods: A three-arm, parallel-group randomized study was conducted with 90 participants aged between 6–12 years reporting to the pediatric dentistry department needing pulp therapy. Children were randomly assigned to three groups: TSD, BFT, and TH. Anxiety was measured pre and postintervention using a pulse oximeter and facial image scale. During the pulp therapy procedure, the coinvestigator recorded participants’ behavior and rated them according to the North Carolina behavior rating scale (NCBRS) . Data obtained were analyzed with SPSS software version 20.0 and were carried out using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Chi-square test; significance value \u003C0.05 was considered. \nResults: Thaumaturgy and BFT outshone conventional methods in reducing facial image scale (FIS) scores measured after the treatment of pulp therapy procedures, showing a statistically significant reduction in FIS scores with ap-value less than 0.001.The pulse rate scores also decreased after the treatment procedure, but the decrease in score was not statistically significant; the p-value equals 0.213. \nConclusion: Thaumaturgy and BFT are better in reducing 6–12-year-old children’s dental anxiety, who are undergoing pulp therapy. TH is most effective, followed by BFT andTSD. \nClinical significance: Thaumaturgy and BFT can be used in pediatric dentistry to reduce dental anxiety in children. \nKeywords: Bach Flower Therapy, Behavior, Behavior management, Child, Dental anxiety, Distraction. \nJournal of South Asian Association of Pediatric Dentistry (2025): 10.5005/jp-journals-10077-3362 \nIntroductIon \nAnxiety is an emotional condition that sometimes cannot even be distinguished before the actual interaction with a dangerous stimulus.1 Avoiding dental care is primarily influenced by feelings of anxiety about visiting the dentist.2, 3 \nChildren who are afraid of the dentist exhibit more substantial behavioral traits,4 which stresses the dentists.5 \nForehand has labeled strong-willed children as the ones who display high degrees of uncooperative behavior.6 \nAlternative supplemental nonpharmacological therapies such as acupressure, music therapy, hypnosis, distraction, and ayurvedic and homeopathic remedies.7 Thaumaturgy (TH) is a novel technique applied to children with strong-willed personalities.6 \nDoctor Edward Bach introduced Bach Flower Therapy (BFT).8 To lessen or resolve the negative emotions/anxiety, flower remedies are made from organically cultivated wildflowers.9 Thus, the aim of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of BFT and TH in reducing dental anxiety in children 6–12 years of age. \nMaterIals and Methods \nThe present randomized controlled three-arm parallel design clinical trial was designed according to the CONSORT guidelines to improve the quality of the paper of randomized controlled study 2010 guidelines .
