reliés à quatre structures decommunication.Bien que les recherches antérieures aient démontré quele degré d'appréhension de communication varie selon le groupeethnique,nos résultats ne supportent pas cette hypothese.  \n## INTRODUCTION\n\nOne of the most common and often reported fears is that of publicspeaking.Daly and McCroskey(1974)labeled this phenomenon com-munications apprehension (CA).CA has been defined as the level of fearassociated with either real or anticipated communication (McCroskey,1977,1978).The current literature points to two types of CA:trait andcontext-based.The trait approach assumes that once a person has devel-oped a level of communications apprehension,it becomes an enduringpersonality trait,also referred to in the literature as shyness and observedbehaviorally as reticence (McCroskey,1984).This approach views com-munication apprehension as a personality-type orientation toward com-munication across a variety of contexts or in a given context,such asspeaking in meetings(McCroskey,1984).CA is a learned condition thathas its beginning early in a person's life and arises as a result of unpleas-ant experiences while interacting with others(Friedrich &Gross,1984).Our study adopted the situational or context-based approach,whichinvestigates variation in the level of communications apprehension thatwill be expressed,depending on the context the respondent has beenasked to anticipate.  \nMcCroskey(1984)has developed a 24-item instrument that mea-sures CA.The Personal Report of Communication Apprehension(PRCA)elicits an individual's personal feelings about communicating inpublic,and includes six items in each of four communication settings:public speaking,talking in meetings,talking in group discussions,andtalking with another person.It uses a five-step Likert scale,and allows aresearcher to calculate five CA scores for any person,one for each of thefour communication settings and one overall score.  \nThe PRCA has been administered to over 25,000 college students inthe U.S.,most of whom have been enrolled in communications courses.  \nThe overallPRCA score may range from 24(minimum CA)to 120(max-imum CA).The scores have been shown to form a normal distributionwith a mean of 65.6 and standard deviation of 15.3(McCroskey,1984)The instrument has internal reliability of approximately 0.94 and hasshown considerable evidence of validity(McCroskey,1977,1978,1984).  \nIn comparison,the sample for this study was drawn from those stu-dents enrolled in a commerce program at a Canadian university.Itshould be noted that for over a quarter of a century,the province inwhich this study was conducted has vigorously attempted to establish arobust alternative cultural context to resist identification with and assim-ilation into the
