live.\n\nIntroduction. \nThe object of agriculture is,first,to produce food, andsecond,to provide a good livelihood and a good life for thoseengaged in the industry. \nCommon Wealth makes no apology for putting theseobjects in this order and for treating the first of them atsome length in this chapter before coming on to the secondin the chapters which follow;for the co-operation which isessential between the industry and the community as awhole tan only be achieved when the community and theindustry are in agreement about this prime objective. \nWe therefore survey,in this chapter, the broad possi-bilities of the next ten or twenty years, and then the actualfacts of the present situation.Thereafter we consider thepolicy which these facts and these possibilities require ofus to-day. \n## The Possibilities.\n\nFrom the dawn of history men and women havedreamed of“the good life”;their dream has always includedmany other things besides the mere fulfilment of the basicmaterial needs;but men have known that in the last resortthe good life itself must remain impossible until the basicmaterial needs could be met.We do not sufficiently realisethat until perhaps as little as half a century ago,the veryidea of fulfilling these basic needs remained.....justa dream. \nTo-day,if we think in terms of ten to twenty yearsrather than in terms of months or the year after nexi, thedream has quite suddenly been converted into potentialfact. \nIt is important to underline the word“potential”.Forjust as some people refuse to believe that the world ismoving majestically into a new age,so there are others whosuppose that there ought to be some clever political trickwhich would enable us immediately to satisfy our everylightest whim by“sitting back and pressing buttons.” \nThis is not so.If anyone hving in such comparativelyprosperous countries as Britain and America is tempted tosuppose that this is so,then he should quickly remember \nthe hundreds of millions of coloured peoples who to-day liveon standards which,if translated into terms of our pricesand values, might work out at 2/6 a week or even less. \nThe important thing is not that we can produce theeffortless actuality of plenty to-morrow,or next year, oreven by 1960.The important thing is that we now knowthat,g","cbCaiv0AwUza83Ee","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiv0AwUza83Ee","pdf",935867,16,"English","# RESTRICTIONS ON USE:\n# TECHNICAL MICROFORM DATA\n# Common Wealth\n## 1.—The Situation in which we
