at the foot of Mount Franklin, surrounded by rockand desert. He lives there today,on the edge of the mountain, with a view of a vast metropolitan complex including Juarez,Mexico—a combined population of over half a million. But thedesert is still around it all;and Tom Lea,for all his wide travels,is a desert Southwesterner to the bone. \nTom Lea,Senior, had come to El Paso in 1901 to practice law,to serve the unfortunate, and to follow the lust for gold and buriedtreasure that abounds,if only in legends,in the Southwesterndesert. He stayed on to become a fixture in the growing com-munity,as judge and then as mayor.Among his friends weredesert rats and prospectors,Mexican revolutionaries, and J.FrankDobie(who was to collaborate for years with Tom,Junior). \nTom's mother, born Zola Mae Utt,was a woman of deepmoral conviction that was expressed positively in joy of livingrather than in taboos and restrictions.Young Tom's home washappy and free:he was encouraged to be what he wanted to be.The nearness of the open desert, with horses to ride and moun-tain country to explore and hunt in,gave Tom first-hand acquaint-ance with the sometimes raw and rugged Southwest. \nAt sixteen Tom expressed his closeness to the spirit of theregion in a poem saved by a teacher—Miss Gertrude Evans-whodoubted that he could ever make a living by his art: \nI am the wind on the top of the mountain. \nThrough ages I have whispered to the sympathetic grass, \nAnd whistled little tunes to the stiff-faced rocks \nWho never seem to hear(J.Frank Dobie,Tom Lea Portfolio,p.5). \nThus early Tom Lea showed an awareness of the impassivedesert, but he also showed an appreciation for the life that aboundsin a land many people consider barren. These qualities grew earlyin him, partly because of the powers of observation he developedas a student of art.He absorbed with vigor the art collections inthe local library, guided by librarian Maud Durlin Sullivan, whoalso sponsored(appropriately,in the library lobby)his first publicexhibition. \nIn 1924,after high school,Tom went,at seventeen,to studyart more formally at the Art Institute of Chicago and under JohnNorton,a noted muralist.Years of study and growth as an artistfollowed, including a four-month visit to Italy, and commissionsfor murals in public buildings. His 1936 mural in the Washing-ton,D.C.,post office is one of his first, but even here his closenessto the land of the American frontier is evident.Entitled\"TheNest","cbCaifYTB45oaQyU","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaifYTB45oaQyU","pdf",2879619,52,"English","# Com Lea - Artist in
