Carefully following these instructions will give the best results. If the doctor cannot see the inside of your colon well because of poor cleaning, the test is less useful and very important things can be missed. You may have to repeat the test another time. The risks of the test are more if the colon is not clean. \nPico-Salax should not be used by people with health problems such as kidney disease and heart failure. \nYour colonoscopy doctor may give you instructions for preparation that are different. Please follow those if they are different than below. \nStep 1. One week before your colonoscopy: Do not eat corn, flax/poppy/ sesame seeds, nuts, fish oils, or medicines containing iron including multivitamins containing iron. \nStep 2. A few days before your colonoscopy: Go to any pharmacy and buy the following special laxatives. You do not need a prescription but they may be kept behind the pharmacy counter. Ask the pharmacist. (Your doctor may suggest different laxatives than the ones below. Please follow your doctor’s instructions. ) \n• 2 Dulcolax (also called bisacodyl) 5 mg tablets. \n• 2 Sachets (one box) of Pico-Salax. \n• Your doctor may ask you to use another laxative such as Lyte prep (Golytely or Colyte or PegLyte or Klean-Prep) or Bi-PegLyte as alternatives to the Pico-Salax above. Use the laxative your doctor recommends. \n• Some people have a problem with nausea when taking the laxatives. You may want to pick up an anti-nausea medicine like Gravol. The pharmacist can show you the choices for this. \nFor more information on [colonoscopy visit:](colonoscopy visit: mycolonoscopy.ca)[ ](colonoscopy visit: mycolonoscopy.ca)[mycolonoscopy.ca](colonoscopy visit: mycolonoscopy.ca). \nHarminder Singh and John R. The day before your colonoscopy \n• Do not eat any solid foods until the colonoscopy is finished. \n• Drink only clear fluids until two hours before the time of the colonoscopy. These are liquids that you can see through. See the ‘Fluids that are okay’ list below. Coffee or tea are okay with sweetener but no milk or whitener. \n• Try to drink one glass of clear fluids each hour that you are awake. \nFluids that are okay: \n✓ clear soups \n✓ apple juice, white grape juice, white cranberry juice \n✓ clear lemon Gatorade/Powerade \n✓ ginger ale, and water \n✓ coffee or tea (sugar and sweetener are okay) \n✓ popsicles (not red or purple) \n✓ lemon or orange Jello \nFood and Fluids that are not okay: \n✗ no bread, grain or rice \n✗ no soups with chunks of food \n✗ no meat \n✗ no fruit or vegetables \n✗ no milk or dairy products \n✗ no red, blue or purple liquid \n✗ no alcoholic drinks \nStep 4. The day before the colonoscopy at 6:00 PM– taking the laxatives \n• Take the 2 Dulcolax (bisacodyl) tablets \n• Dissolve one sachet of Pico-Salax in 150 ml (a mug) of cold water. Stir until completely dissolved. Drink this laxative. Then drink 1.5 to 2 litres of a variety of clear fluids or sports drinks (do not drink water alone) in the next 2 hours. If your doctor recommended a different laxative take the first half of that laxative between 6 and 8 pm the evening before the colonoscopy. \nFor more information on [colonoscopy visit:](colonoscopy visit: mycolonoscopy.ca)[ ](colonoscopy visit: mycolonoscopy.ca)[mycolonoscopy.ca](colonoscopy visit: mycolonoscopy.ca). \nHarminder Singh and John R.
