To update, finesse, or elaborate one section immediately means that others, too, demand a counterbalancing attention, till eventually the whole structure, like a precarious house of cards, appears to require rebuilding from the ground up, or top-to-toe lamination, to prevent further interference. The concern to avoid undue interference was especially intense in the case of Colonial and Postcolonial Literature: Migrant Metaphors, as the book has been generously received across its ten years of shelf life, and has, in its small way, become incorporated into the broad landscape of postcolonial reading and teaching. \nWith this in mind, I have generally avoided excessive tampering with the text. I have, however, tried to elaborate, finesse, and refresh the critical observations of the book throughout to reflect on and respond to some of the new critical interventions and historical investigations in the vigorously expanding field of postcolonial literary and cultural studies. Throughout I have substantially added to and updated––and I hope sharpened and enriched––its illustrative examples, to the extent indeed that a number of new names and titles has crowded into the text. I have nowhere unduly subtracted material. The overall shape and content of the book remains as it was. \nKey additions are as follows. The new Afterword,‘Belated Reading’, looks at new developments and current preoccupations in postcolonialism, particularly as concerns the impact, or not, of global forces on postcolonial writing and studies. The Chronology has been updated to 2004, but also extended outwards or backwards in time in order to include, for example, more ‘postcolonial’ and/or anti-colonial texts published pre-1950 .
