COUNTERFEIT LOAN PAYMENT\n\nCHAMPAIGN,IL(CPS)--Ray Jorgensen thinks he might have discovered the true worthof a Guaranteed Student Loan in these troubled economic times. \nJorgensen,a freshman at the University of Illinois, picked up $525 in cachfrom the Office of Business Affairs as part of his Guaranteed Student Loan Jan.15.After stopping at the campus store to purchase books and supplies,Jorgensen took thebills to the First National Bank in Champaign for deposit. \nMore on next page \nContinued from previous page \nThat was when the bank manager discovered $50 of the loan was a counterfeit bill. \nAlthough the Secret Service, called in on the case by the bank, cleared Jorgensen, the freshman has yet to be reimubursed for the phony currency.A plea to theadministration yielded sympathy, but no money. \n\"we all feel sympathy,we all believe him,but..he cannot prove he got the billhere,\"says Ray Sanden, manager of student loans and accounts receivable. \nJorgensen says he understands the university's position, though not the school'slack of cooperation in the episode.\"You'd think they'd have more compassion fora student,\"he laments.\"They're going at it as a big institution, and the littleguy gets screwed.\" \n# PITT CONVICTS STUDENTS OF'INTIMIDATING′WOMAN WITH CLASSIFIED AD\n\nPITTSBURGH,PA(CPS)--A classified ad in the student newspaper at the Universityof Pittsburgh has led to the disciplining of three Pitt students charged with\"intimidating\"a fourth student with the ad. \nThe Campus Judicial Board(CBJ)found Alan Gladish,Douglas Levers and PeterKanaitis guilty of\"intimidating\"a female student by placing an ad in the Pitt Newsand displaying campus posters all bearing the initials \"SLMF\"and the Roman numeralsMCCXXII. \nThe numerals translate to 1227,the dorm room number of a woman with initialsapparently similar to SLMF.Neither the CBJ nor the police would release the nameof the female student, who complained she was particularly frightened when someoneplaced a circled copy of the classified ad under her dorm door. \n\"She didn't know who was doing it,\"says Caroline Liebenguth of the CBJ,whichput Gladish,Levers and Kanaitis on housing probation through the end of 1981.Thestudents are appealing the verdict. \nBut \"through a whole series of events,it became clear what the words meant,\"the board determined. They amounted to \"plain harassment,\"Liebenguth says. \n\"It was abstract, the words had no meaning,\"Gladish counters. He s","cbCaik5LucYYLEd0","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaik5LucYYLEd0","pdf",2348240,11,"English","# Editor's Note\n# Index\n# STUDENT GETS COUNTERFEIT LOAN PAYMENT\n# PITT CONVICTS STUDENTS OF 'INTIMIDATING' WOMAN WITH CLASSIFIED AD\n# STUDENTS BREAK COMPUTER CODE AND MAKE CAMPUS FILES 'OBNOXIOUS'","[{\"question\":\"Why does the packet note only one CPS packet is sent that week?\",\"answer\":\"The Editor's Note explains that, according to the publishing schedule and the “March period,” the issue is skipped ostensibly for spring break.\"},{\"question\":\"What problem arises in the Guaranteed Student Loan story?\",\"answer\":\"A student deposits $525 in loan money, but the bank discovers $50 of the payment is counterfeit; he has not been reimbursed despite Secret Service involvement and university sympathy.\"},{\"question\":\"How were students disciplined in the Pitt classified-ad case?\",\"answer\":\"A Campus Judicial Board found three students guilty of “intimidating” a female student connected to a classified ad and campus posters, resulting in housing probation through the end of 1981 and restrictions pending appeal.\"}]","College Press Service - Editor's Note - March 16, 1981 | PDF",1790601630]
