These programs play an important role in preparingearly childhood educators for the workforce; however, itis unknown how manyinclude training in outdoor play. We examined how outdoor play pedagogy ispositioned in publicly-funded college and institute programs in Canada. Only fiveCanadian public colleges listed explicit courses on outdoor play in the fall of 2018.Despite this lack of calendar offerings, a survey of 28 faculty from 24 differentinstitutions indicated that outdoor play training was seen as important. We rec-ommend that those working to advance outdoor play pedagogy include collegefaculty in the process and that professional development resources focused onoutdoor play be made available to college ECE programs. \nKeywords: outdoor play, pedagogy, pre-service ECE programs, training, college faculty \nMots clés : jeu en plein air, pédagogie, programmes de formation initiale enéducation dela petite enfance, formation, enseignants collégiaux \n## Introduction\n\nImagine what it would be like for a child on a day (or several days) of not beingoutdoors. Think about the experiencesand learning opportunities that children \n86 Canadian Journal of Environmental Education, 23 (2), 2020 \nmiss when they are not afforded access to the wind at their backs or the feel ofraindrops softly falling. Imagine how the lack of outdoor play and connectionsto nature, such as observing and finding animal tracks in the snow, engaging inrisk-taking, and developing environmental competencies, negatively influenceschildren’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical development. Children arehard-wired to need nature and to be part of natural environments (Smirnova &Riabkova, 2016) . It is widely recognized that positive outdoor play experiencesin nature engage all the senses and promote a sense of curiosity and wonder-ment, which contribute to the development of children’s self-confidence andconnection to their environments (Carson, 1956; Wilson, 2012) . This is founda-tionalto children becoming stewardsofthe environment. \nIn many nations, governments have been investing significant funds intoearly learning and childcare—for infrastructure, the development of curriculumframeworks, access to early learning and childcare programs, and, in someinstances, training and development. In Canada, publicly funded pre-serviceearly childhood education (ECE) programs at community colleges and institutesplay an important role in preparing early childhood educators for the workforce(Kaplan, 2018) .
