It helps individuals learn self-management by practicing skills during sessions and through structured homework to build coping strategies that support changes in thinking, emotional responses, and actions. Therapists collaborate with consumers to set goals, track progress, develop individualized service plans through conceptualization, and teach techniques such as cognitive evaluation, problem solving, communication training, mindfulness, relaxation, and distress tolerance. CBT may address anxiety, depression, PTSD, substance use, and other serious mental health conditions via individual or group sessions.",{"@graph":69,"@context":123},[70,84,106],{"@type":71,"itemListElement":72},"BreadcrumbList",[73,77,79,82],{"item":74,"name":75,"@type":76,"position":8},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":78,"name":9,"@type":76,"position":14},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/",{"item":80,"name":35,"@type":76,"position":81},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/healthcare/",3,{"item":83,"name":65,"@type":76,"position":19},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/cognitive-behavior-therapy-cbt-an-evidence-based-practice/203928/",{"url":83,"name":65,"@type":85,"image":86,"author":91,"headline":65,"publisher":94,"fileFormat":97,"inLanguage":63,"description":67,"dateModified":98,"datePublished":99,"encodingFormat":97,"isAccessibleForFree":100,"interactionStatistic":101},"DigitalDocument",{"url":87,"@type":88,"width":89,"height":90},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/cognitive-behavior-therapy-cbt-an-evidence-based-practice/203928.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":92,"@type":93},"Jake","Person",{"url":74,"name":95,"@type":96},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-05","2026-09-04",true,{"@type":102,"interactionType":103,"userInteractionCount":105},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":104},"ViewAction",12,{"@type":107,"mainEntity":108},"FAQPage",[109,115,119],{"name":110,"@type":111,"acceptedAnswer":112},"What is Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) based on?","Question",{"text":113,"@type":114},"CBT is based on the idea that thoughts, emotions, and behaviors interact. Specifically, our thoughts determine our feelings and our behavior. Therefore, negative, and unrealistic thoughts can cause us distress and result in problems. \nCBT places an emphasis on helping individuals learn to be their own therapists. Through exercises in the session as well as “homework”exercises outside of sessions, consumers are helped to develop coping skills, whereby they can learn to change their own thinking, problematic emotions, and behavior. \nHow CBT Helps \nCBT therapists work with consumers to set goals for them. They chart progress towards those goals. Therapists should also make what is called a“conceptualization” of each consumer. Conceptualization helps them work with the consumer to make an individualized plan of service. Therapists explain the plan and any related skills and techniques, to each consumer. If consumers agree to the suggestions, then they work together with their therapists to learn these techniques and skills. \nSome techniques include: \n• Identifying negative thoughts \n• Evaluating thoughts \n• Scheduling meaningful or pleasurable activities \n• Identifying values and aspirations \n• Setting goals and breaking goals down into small steps \n• Solving problems \n• Making decisions \n• Learning communication skills, including roleplaying difficult conversations \n• Learning mindfulness skills \n• Tolerating distress, relaxation \n• Doing self-therapy between sessions, or after the conclusion of treatment \nWhat Can CBT Help? \n• Anxiety \n• Depression \n• Eating Disorders \n• Personality Disorders \n• Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) \n• Serious Mental Health Conditions \n• Substance Use Disorder \n• And More \nCBT can be provided through individual or group sessions, when available. \nTo Learn More \nDiscuss if CBT is right for you with your current treatment provider or contact Saginaw County Community Mental Health Authority’s Centralized Access and Intake Unit (CAI) at (989) 797-3559.","cbCaipw8qpVUsqY0","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipw8qpVUsqY0","pdf",620958,"English","# Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) - An Evidence-Based Practice\n## What is Cognitive Behavior Therapy\n## How CBT Helps\n## What Can CBT Help?\n## To Learn More","[{\"question\":\"What is Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) based on?\",\"answer\":\"CBT is based on the idea that thoughts, emotions, and behaviors interact.
