She bypassed the ER waiting room filled with anxious patients who’d probably been there longer than they wanted and paused at the junction to the ER proper. Susan Sweeney, the charge nurse, her thick blond hair held back in a scrunchie, looked fresh and alert in her usual colorful scrub top, light blue pants, and white running shoes. Intake tablet in hand, she stood in the center of the pod, studying the board. A few of the night shift clustered at the counter, finishing up chart work before sign-out.  \nOnly half the board was full. Unusually quiet. Overnight must have been slow. Good. The first of July chaos would start soon enough.  \nAnd she had twenty minutes until that chaos would be her problem.  \nDetouring to her office, Lena dropped her bag on a chair and slipped out of her light linen jacket.
