EARTH'SSYSTEMS \nEarth is made up of four systems that worktogether:the atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and biosphere.Clouds and precipitation are specialbecause they're part of both the atmosphere and thehydrosphere. The atmosphere is the layer of gases \nsurrounding Earth. The hydrosphere is the total amountof water on Earth. \nWithout clouds and precipitation, our planet wouldbe very dry and wouldn't be able to support life.Cloudskeep Earth warm at night and cool during the day.NASAstudies clouds to better understand Earth's weather, orthe daily state of the atmosphere. They also study theEarth's climate,or the average weather conditions overa period of years. \nThis book will talk about the different types ofclouds, the types of precipitation they produce, andthe natural disasters that can occur with or afterincreased precipitation. \nA number of natural disasters are connected to clouds andprecipitation.NASA uses satellites to study clouds from outer spaceand track weather patterns. \n5 \n# WHAT ARE CLOUDS?\n\nClouds are made of water drops or ice crystals thatare light enough to float in the sky. They form whenwater changes into water vapor, the gaseous state ofwater. This process is called evaporation. When the watervapor rises high enough in the sky,the temperature ofthe atmosphere drops, causing the water vapor to cool. The water vapor condenses,or changes from a gas to aliquid, and forms water droplets. These droplets stick toparticles floating in the air, such as dust, ice,or salt fromEarth's oceans. This creates a cloud. \nClouds also begin to form when
