First described in 1995, the SEBT assesses dynamic postural control (DPC) of the lower limb, which is the ability to maintain the centre ofmass within the base of support after a voluntary movement or external perturbation.1 People undergoing the SEBT are asked to maintain balance while single-leg squatting with the assessed limb while reaching asfaras possible along tape lines in multiple directions with the other limb, then returning to the original position. The farther the reach, the better the DPC. Failure criteria include losing balance, missing the tape line, moving or lifting any part of the stance foot, and removing hands from the hips. The original SEBT assesses eight directions by crossing four tape lines on the floor to form an asterisk. Reached distances are divided by the participant’s limb length (distance between the anterior superior iliac spine and the medial malleoli) and expressed as ‘normalised’ percentages. Individual scores are calculated for each direction, while a composite score sums all individual scores divided by the total number of directions assessed. The modified SEBT (mSEBT) assesses anterior, posterolateral and posteromedial directions with a variant ‘Y’ shape; it shortens assessment times and avoids redundancy.2 | | The SEBT is valid for detecting DPC deficits between limbs.2 SEBT scores moderately correlate with the 40-m fast-paced walk test (r = –0.61) and weakly to moderately with the single leg hop test (r = 0.34 to 0.53) and thigh muscle isokinetic strength (r = 0.35 to 0.45).3,4 SEBT test-retest and inter-rater reliability have been extensively studied, showing sufficient values in healthy young adults (ICC 0.68 to 0.94) and people with musculoskeletal conditions such as ankle sprain (ICC 0.72 to 0.93), knee osteoarthritis (ICC 0.93 [composite score]) and anterior cruciate ligament injuries (ICC 0.94 to 0.99).3–6 The reliability of the SEBT has also been studied in healthy children (ICC 0.51 to 0.93) and children with neurological conditions such as Down syndrome (ICC 0.98 to 0.99) and cerebral palsy (ICC –0.99 to 1).7–9 Low anterior reach distance and composite scores are associated with greater lower limb injury risk in young athletes.2,10 Individual direction smallest detectable change (SDC) ranges 6 to 13%, with anterior and medial directions having smaller SDC than posterior and lateral directions.4,5 The SDC of the composite score isabout 8%.3,9 No minimum important change value has been reported, but improvements in SEBT score are associated with improvements in physical function.2 |\n| Commentary | | |\n\nThe SEBT is valid and reliable for assessing DPC deficits across different populations. It has limited potential for examiner assessment bias, and normalised scores facilitate direct comparisons among individuals of different heights. The SEBT is easy to implement with minimal equipment requirements and a simple scoring method; however, it requires two examiners: one to record the distance reached and another to check that failure criteria are not met; this may not be feasible in all clinical settings. Normal SEBT scores vary across different sports and sexes; clinicians and trainers working with athletes should consider these factors when interpreting results.11 \nVariations in SEBT procedures can affect test outcomes.12 Users of the SEBT can ensure assessment consistency by following Picot et al’s recommendations.13 Medial and anteromedial directions can better detect DPC deficits than the posterolateral direction used in themSEBT, which could be omitted.14 To date, the relationship between the SEBT scores ","cbCaivGIqULTKPma","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaivGIqULTKPma","pdf",228192,"English","# Clinimetrics: The Star Excursion Balance Test\n## Summary\n## Commentary","[{\"question\":\"What does the Star Excursion Balance Test (SEBT) assess?\",\"answer\":\"SEBT assesses dynamic postural control of the lower limb by requiring balance during single-leg squatting with multi-directional reaching along tape lines.\"},{\"question\":\"How are SEBT scores calculated and interpreted?\",\"answer\":\"Reached distances are divided by limb length and reported as normalized percentages.
