Understanding of the structure and states of matter, reaction types, equations and stoichiometry, equilibrium, kinetics, thermodynamics, and descriptive and experimental chemistry is required, as is the ability to interpret and apply this material to new and unfamiliar problems. During this exam, an online scientific calculator function and a periodic table are available as part of the testing software. \nThe exam contains approximately 75 questions to be answered in approximately 90 minutes. Some of these are pretest questions that won’t be scored. \nKnowledge and Skills Required \nQuestions on the Chemistry exam require candidates to demonstrate one or more of the following abilities. \n§ Recall—remember specific facts; demonstrate straightforward knowledge of information and familiarity with terminology \n§ Application—understand concepts and reformulate information into other equivalent terms; apply knowledge to unfamiliar and/or practical situations; use mathematics to solve chemistry problems \n§ Interpretation—infer and deduce from data available and integrate information to form conclusions; recognize unstated assumptions \nThe subject matter of the Chemistry exam is drawn from the following topics. The percentages next to the main topics indicate the approximate percentage of exam questions on that topic. \n20% STRUCTURE OF MATTER \nAtomic theory and atomic structure \n§ Evidence for the atomic theory \n§ Atomic masses; determination by chemical and physical means \n§ Atomic number and mass number; isotopes and mass spectroscopy \n§ Electron energy levels: atomic spectra, atomic orbitals \n§ Periodic relationships, including, for example, atomic radii, ionization energies, electron affinities, oxidation states \n§ Nuclear chemistry: nuclear equations, half-lives, and radioactivity; chemical applications \nChemical bonding \n§ Binding forces \nw Types: covalent, ionic, metallic, macromolecular (or network), dispersion, hydrogen bonding \nw Relationships to structure and to properties \nw Polarity of bonds, electronegativities \n§ VSEPR theory and Lewis electron-dot diagrams \nw Hybridization of orbitals \nw Geometry of molecules, ions, and coordination complexes \nw Structural isomerism \nw Resonance \nw Sigma and pi bonds \nw Dipole moments of molecules \nw Relation of properties to structure \n19% STATES OF MATTER \nGases \n§ Laws of ideal gases; equations of state for an ideal gas \n§ The mole concept; Avogadro’s number \n§ Kinetic-molecular theory \nw Interpretation of ideal gas laws on the basis of this theory \nw Dependence of kinetic energy of molecules on temperature: Boltzmann distribution \nw Deviations from ideal gas laws Liquids and solids \n§ Liquids and solids from the kinetic-molecular viewpoint \n§ Phase diagrams of one-component systems \n§ Changes of state, critical phenomena \nSolutions \n§ Types of solutions and factors affecting solubility \n§ Methods of expressing concentration \n§ Colligative properties; for example, Raoult’s law \n§ Effect of interionic attraction on colligative properties and solubility \n12% REACTION TYPES \nAcid-base reactions; concepts of Arrhenius, BrønstedLowry, and Lewis; amphoterism \nReactions involving coordination complexes Precipitation reactions \nOxidation-reduction reactions \n§ Oxidation number \n§ The role of the electron in oxidation-reduction \n§ Electrochemistry; electrolytic cells, standard halfcell potentials, prediction of the direction of redox reactions, effect of concentration changes \n10% EQUATIONSANDSTOICHIOMETRY \nIonic and molecular species present in chemical systems; net-ionic equations \nStoichiometry: mass and volume relations with emphasis on the mole concept \nBalancing of equations, including those for redox reactions \n7% EQUILIBRIUM \nConcept of dynamic equilibrium of phys","cbCaipZxOx4Ao5yr","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaipZxOx4Ao5yr","pdf",764402,"English","# Description of the Exam\n## Exam coverage and required skills\n## Testing format and timing\n# Knowledge and Skills Required\n## Recall, Application, Interpretation\n# Subject Topics (by percentage)\n## Structure of Matter\n## States of Matter\n## Reaction Types\n## Equations and Stoichiometry\n## Equilibrium\n## Kinetics\n## Thermodynamics\n## Descriptive Chemistry","[{\"question\":\"What main topics are covered in the CLEP Chemistry exam?\",\"answer\":\"The exam covers structure and states of matter, reaction types and equations/stoichiometry, equilibrium, kinetics, thermodynamics, and descriptive chemistry.\"},{\"question\":\"What skills must test-takers demonstrate?\",\"answer\":\"Candidates must be able to recall facts and terminology, apply concepts to unfamiliar situations using math when needed, and interpret data to form conclusions and recognize assumptions.\"},{\"question\":\"What tools are available during the exam and how many questions are there?\",\"answer\":\"An online scientific calculator and a periodic table are available in the testing software, and the exam contains about 75 questions to be completed in about 90 minutes.\"}]","CLEP Chemistry - At a Glance - Exam Overview | PDF",1790682674,13]
