Classical Piano Music andthe Jazz Vocabulary\n\nBy Ted Rosenthal \nMany jazz greats have not onlymastered the jazz vernacular, but have also been interestedin, and incorporated, aspects of Euro-pean classical music.Among pianists, you can hear the influence of Debussyand the impressionists on Bill Evans andHerbie Hancock. You can also detect astrong connection between Bartók andthe music of McCoy Tyner and ChickCorea. The runs ofArt Tatum can be relat-ed to Chopin and Liszt, and Tatum alsoplayed his own arrangements of someclassical pieces, including Dvorák'sHumoresque and Rubinstein's Melody in F. \nBy listening, transcribing, analyzing, and playing along with improvised solos, the jazz pianist becomes conversant injazz language and styles. As an improvis-er,however,the jazz pianist must alsothink and work like a composer, lookingfor musical material to modify, develop, and make part of an individual style.Quite often these sources are—rightly—the music of the great jazz soloists andimprovisers. But there are other musicalsources to mine. \nOne area often overlooked is the useof passages,or other musical material, from the classical piano repertoire, which \nTempo rubatoExample 1:Debussy:Clair de lune,Mm.15-18 \nPIANO &KEY BOARDM AY/JUNE 1998 \ncan be adapted and used as part of thejazz pianist's vocabulary.Although theclassical repertoire for most standard jazzinstruments(bass, drums, saxophone, and trumpet)is limited, pianists have ahuge repertoire—an encyclopedia ofmusic—to draw from to enhance theirjazz vocabulary and technique. \nMost jazz pianists begin their musicaleducation studying classical piano, andthey should not think of these studies asa vacuum. With a good understanding ofchord-scale relationships, and by apply-ing creative alterations to rhythm andharmony, the classical repertoire can bean endless source of material and inspi-ration.Classical pianists can also benefitfrom understanding these musical con-nections.Applying knowledge of chordsand jazz harmony to passages that classi-cal pianists already know can serve as agood jumping-off point and a big head-start to learning how to improvise in ajazz context. \nFor the jazz pianist, one of the mostobvious and fruitful areas of investiga-tion is harmony. The music of the early1900's,particularly Debussy,Ravel,Scri-abin,and Bartók,contains a wealth ofinteresting harmonies, progressions, and \nvoicings that jazz pianists can add to theirvocabulary.Even some of the harmony inSchoenberg's pre-12-tone works hasfound its way into the language of mod-ern jazz harmony.Twentieth century har-monic concepts have been, and continueto be,developed within the jazz vernacu-lar.A good example of this cross-culturalmingling can be found in the popularity(in the jazz world)of an influential classi-cal harmonic treatise,Contemporary Har-mony—Romanticism through the Twelve-Tone Row,by Ludmila Ulehla of the Man-hattan School of Music. This book, longout of print, has been republished byAdvance Music,a jazz-music publisher, due,no doubt,to jazz musicians'interestin this work. \nJazz pianists often function as harmon-ic arrangers in creating chord voicings andreharmonizing standards(such as Gersh-win,Porter,and Kern)or their own origi-nal compositions. The piano music ofDebussy, for instance, reveals many inter-esting voicings and harmonic progres-sions.Debussy often abandoned tradition-al functional harmony by using modes inhis melodies and harmony. It is alsocommon in jazz harmony to think of achord not just as a group of intervals, butas part of a larger mode or chord-scale. \nIn the excerpt from “Clair de lune”(see example 1),we see not only a basicE-flat-minor chord, but all the notes(except A-flat)in the E-flat dorian modeThese voicings could be applied to a jazzharmony on E-flat minor, the half-step\"rub\"between F and G-flat being partic-ularly characteristic of a jazz voicing. \nTo incorporate these voicings intoyour own musical vocabulary, there are anumber of approaches. To learn thechords thoroughly and be able to
