He lists the disasters, the droughts, the storms, the fires, the encroaching seas that swallowed up so much of the land, the brutal war for what little sustenance remained. The result was Panem, a shining Capitol ringed by thirteen districts, which brought peace and prosperity to its citizens. Then came the Dark Days, the uprising of the districts against the Capitol. Twelve were defeated, the thirteenth obliterated. The Treaty of Treason gave us the new laws to guarantee peace and, as our yearly reminder that the Dark Days must never be repeated, it gave us the Hunger Games. \nThe rules of the Hunger Games are simple. In punishment for the uprising, each of the twelve districts / must provide one girl and one boy, called tributes, to participate. The twenty-four tributes will be imprisoned in a vast outdoor arena that could contain anything from a burning desert to a frozen wasteland. Over a period of several weeks, \nClassics \nFACULTY OF ARTS \nthe competitors must fight to the death. The last tribute standing wins. Taking the kids from our districts, forcing them to kill one another while we watch – this is the Capitol’s way of reminding us how totally we are at their mercy. How little chance we would stand of surviving another rebellion. Whatever words they use, the real message is clear.“Look how we take your children and sacrifice them and there’s nothing you can do. If you lift a finger, we will destroy every last one of you. Just as we did in District Thirteen.” \nTo make it humiliating as well as torturous, the Capitol requires us to treat the Hunger Games as a festivity, a sporting event pitting every district against the others. The last tribute alive receives a life of ease back home, and their district will be showered with prizes, largely consisting of food. All year, the Capitol will show the winning district gifts of grain and oil and even delicacies like sugar while the rest of us battle starvation. \nClassics \nFACULTY OF ARTS \nP377-78 \nA full, beautiful moon emerges, and even without the [night vision] glasses I can see outside. I can’t decide if the moon is real or merely a projection of the Gamemakers. I know it was full shortly before I left home. Gale and I watched it rise as we hunted into the late hours. \nHow long have I been gone? I’m guessing it’s been about two weeks in the arena, and there was that week / of preparation in the Capitol. Maybe the moon has completed its cycle. For some reason, I badly want it to be my moon, the same one I see from the woods around District 12. That would give me something to cling to in the surreal world of the arena, where the authenticity of everything is to be doubted. \nClassics \nFACULTY OF ARTS \n“Ask yourself, do you really trust the people you’re working with? Do you really know what’s going on? And if you don’t… find out.” \n(Mockingj","cbCaijWGgpaXgNL8","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijWGgpaXgNL8","pdf",1205430,48,"English","# Panem history and the Dark Days\n## Hunger Games rules and Capitol control\n## Quotes and page references on names and survival","[{\"question\":\"What event led to the creation of the Hunger Games in Panem?\",\"answer\":\"After the districts’ uprising known as the Dark Days, the defeated districts and the obliteration of the thirteenth district led to new laws under the Treaty of Treason, which established the Hunger Games as a yearly reminder.\"},{\"question\":\"How are tributes selected and what is their fate?\",\"answer\":\"Each of the twelve districts must provide one girl and one boy as tributes.
