We meet the enthusiasts and specialists joining Britain’s booming classic car hobby  \nW  \nelcome to a packed bumper issue, exploring where a classic vehicle movement worth £7.3 billion a year to  \nthe nation’s coffers is headed – and who’ll be behind the wheel when it faces its biggest challenges.  \nIf the phrase ‘yesterday’s vehicles on tomorrow’s roads’ sounds familiar, it’s because it’s the slogan embraced by the Federation of British Historic Vehicle Clubs. The Federation’s National Historic Vehicle Survey revealed that enthusiasts between the ages of 25 and 34 – the generation  \nnow increasingly buying and running classics for the first time –were the most likely to see the value of the wider role of historic vehicles, with 31 per cent of adults under the age of  \n35 believing that young people should be encouraged to take an interest in our motoring heritage.  \nThat’s a great opportunity for the clubs, businesses and event organisers catering for the 1.9 million historic vehicles dotted around the UK – but one that’s not without its challenges. The number of driving tests taken in automatic cars has more than doubled  \nover the past five years, limiting the number of newly-qualified youngsters who are in a position to drive classics that were overwhelmingly made with manual transmissions.  \nThere are also ongoing challenges to the cost of living, with some clubs admitting that they are struggling to recruit newer members.
